anybody know why my truck would go through 3 water pumps in 5k miles. the first one Ford changed when my water pump pulley broke the the second one went coincidentally when my head gaskets blew of corse they didnt know it until they test drove it afterwords and now 5k miles later im driving down the freeway and the third one gets the teeth chewed up.
It also has a diff. water pump than the 04 1/2 and up. That is why I asked. Your pump is smaller and prone to failure. That is why we need info if you need help.
They are probably installing the updated water pump without installing the later model front cover. The water pump was updated in 2004 to a bigger pump. Unfortunately Ford made it to where you could connect the new pump to the old front cover.
That is one of the smaller pump problems and to fix it right the front cover also needs to be updated. No offense but we don't ask all these questions because we have nothing else to do.
The smaller impeller is WAY more prone to failure. Installing the larger impeller on the old front cover is said to cause failure also (IIRC). Edit - either that or the larger pump will just not fit on the 2003 without an updated front cover also. I can not rememember which right now..
I am too slow today 69cj! Keep up the good work .....
thanks for your help gentlemen and you to 69cj
I wish I would have known this yesterday since they just put it back together
this kinda scares me I was just driving and with no warning it just got hot
it went 140000 miles without any problem and now 3 times in the last 5k miles
should I take it back apart or just wing it till it goes again and have the right parts ready?
Trash; What's done is done. If you r lucky maybe you will get the same mileage as you did out of the original. Hope you do. Mark; Good luck on the surgery, I have, I think the same, scheduled for October.
The original water pump impeller was 90mm in diameter and it was increased to 100mm, thats close to 7/16 inch bigger. Ford says both pumps have the same bolt pattern, but a different sealing area and as a result the smaller pump has the physical ability to be installed on an updated front cover. They say if you put the smaller pump on the updated front cover you may get a coolant leak along with overheating.
I have no idea if you can put a 100mm pump on a 90mm front cover, but if you can it might be this owners problem. He has to look up his original invoice and see if the updated front cover was installed.
