Sensor covered in oil

I dont know what this sensor is but it is covered in oil and my buddy doesnt know what it is called but said it is not supposed to have oil in or on it. It is located on the driver side of the block on top near the front directly inside the valve cover.. does anybody know what it is and what its function is and does it need to be replaced?

ICP sensor, and if it's got oil inside the electrical connector it needs to be replaced.

ICP stands for injection control pressure... and I always forget exactly what it does but its related to the high pressure oil system used to fire the injectors.

Never done it before, but as far as I know you just unplug, spin the old one out with a wrench, put the new one back in, and plug 'er in.

ICP is a piece of cake. just pull off the connector (gently) get some electrical connector cleaner, spray it down real good to get all the oil residue out/off the connector, unscrew the old one you might need a 5/8 crow ft if I remember right. put in the new one and replug. It's the first thing i did to my F250.

Like they said, it's an easy change. Unplug connector, use a crows foot wrench to remove the old one, the new one is a different design so you can use a big socket to install it, then plug the connector back in. The spec calls for 21 ft - lbs putting it back on. Don't overtighten it, you don't want to crack anything.

The ICP reads the oil pressure in the heads. It provides this reading to the PCM so it can adjust the IPR as needed to provide proper pressure to the fuel injectors for the load demanded by your right foot.

Is this something that should be changed out after a few years or just let it right? What's the price tag on one of these?

I changed mine at around 280,000 miles because I noticed it starting to leak a little bit and already had purchased a spare just in case. Don't remember the cost, but I wouldn't mess with it until there are some signs or symptoms of an issue.

Stick with OEM on sensors. Ford has them and they like them. You can find them on Ebay sometimes and I think Bob at Diesel Orings has them.(link in sig).
