I agree, unless there was a tranny problem, there is no way his setup was roaring at 25 in second. With 4.10s and a C6 I can run 45 up hills in second, and I could pull 50-55, if i really wanted to make my 351 howl, but I back off to 40 or 45 to keep from winding the **** out of my motor.

I only have 3.55 in mine and pulling up the hill it downshifted to second and at the top of the hill I topped out at 25mph. New tranny, low mileage motor, WTF?

If your motor was screaming and you were in second @25mph the trans has to be slipping.

you know what this post makes great sense-your motor should not be screaming in second gear at 25 mph-any one on this place can stick their truck in 2nd and get way over 25 before the motor will top out just something to think about?

The transmission shifts just fine and has never felt like it slips, plus it was rebuilt around 6000 miles ago. I was towing when this was happening so I figured it would be going slower up the hill than normal. Like I said before, I was towing around 4500lbs up a very steep hill. A quarter of the way up the hill the truck downshifted it's C6 three speed from 3rd to 2nd(passing gear) and held it in that gear to the top. I have tires on it that are around 33" tall and the gears are 3.55 so I figured that would hinder my towing. Regardless if it shifted twice while going up hill and went down to first gear, there is something wrong and I don't think it's the tranny. I'll have to pull the brake drums off tomorrow and see if they are dragging. It seems like I do have to give it more gas to get it moving than I should have to. If it is the tranny, that seems odd considering it's a low mileage C6 and those are hard to kill. If its toasted Im gonna swap in an NP435.

I finished installing my new Remflex gaskets and still the annoying tick is there. My old gaskets were blown out but I don't think they were causing all the noise. Im thinking the sound could be an exhaust valve or something internal making it tick. Im gonna go over the basics on the ignition(coil, timing, ign.switch) to see if that could be the problem before I tear into the motor. Any other advice is welcome.

it sure could be the brakes dragging BUT, keep in mind that just cause it'a a rebuilt tranny, does not mean it's NOT the tranny.

The roaring engine you talk about makes me wonder if your fan clutch isn't seized, if it is it'll suck the life out of the motor.. probabaly takes 100hp to turn that thing at anything over 2000rpm.

Timing?

The fan is not seized. I can hear it engage and disengage when it's at idle. I also checked the tranny fluid to see if the fluid smelled burnt and it was as pure looking and smelling as fluid straight out of the bottle.
I was going to check the timing to see if the ticking that I am hearing is because of it being out of time and I discovered something. I cannot for the life of me, read the timing marks when the engine is running. I cleaned the marks but still all I see is a blurr when it's running. Any tips on how to read the timing marks better?

I suspect timing issues, static timing with spout connector disconnected should be 10deg.
Your truck should be able to tow that load up a 6% grade at 65 mph, no sweat. Lose the 33s and the 3.55s, swap them out for 4.10s and sensible tire size. You will think you gained 250hp.
