There was a mention of the OEM Conti-Trac tires on a previuos thread and I wanted to know what replacement tires others have had success with.
OEM Conti-Trac tires are lousy IMO and become very noisy as they wear. I replaced them with Michelin Cross-Terrain SUV tires in '06 as they were rated among the best for low road noise and good durability. They are holding up well but are starting to become noisy as they approach the wear indicators (approx 50,000 miles on them). Have any of you had a positive experience with replacement tires for your Expedition?
Those have worked out great for me - all aspects of a quality tire, a little pricey but worth it. Plus I use Firestone for oil changes and they rotate the tires for free each time at 3k miles. With a lifetime balance, road hazard, and lifetime alignment I dont worry about tires any longer.
I've run BFG A/T's (63k), Bridgestone A/T Revo's (51k)...both were excellent tires....and very expensive. Now have General Grabber AT2's with about 10k on them and they're stellar. Terrific in all conditions, including snow and ice. Oh yeah...and they cost me $105/each from Tirerack.com.
I had the Kelly Safari AWR's on my Expedition and got 75k out of them before I had to replace. They are no longer made. I ended up going with the Uniroyal Laredo Cross Country, as my driving style has changed and am mostly on the road now and don't need an all-terrain tire. I have roughly 9k on the Uniroyals and they look brand new. They also come with a 60,000 mile warranty. Inexpensive and worth looking at, IMO.

I had good luck with the uniroyals too. I did have the BF All Terrains on my full size 89 Bronco they looked good but balled up something terrible in the snow.
If you need a good snow tire look for something that has groves/lines cut through the middle so that the snow clears out of them.
Last time I went into my tire dealer, he recommended the MICHELIN Latitude to replace my Michelin Cross-Terrain and they're a little less expensive. He claimed they had less roll resistance for better mileage. I have about 6000 miles and was towing a trailer for about 4000 of that so I can't endorse the improved mileage at this point but they ride nice, are quiet, handle great and have a 65,000 mile warranty. So far, so good.
I liked the Michelin LTX I ran on my 97, good traction, wear and were quiet got 80K out of them before the wear bars started to show, also rotated and rebalanced every 5K to 7K miles.
