E40D- Same Problem a year ago
Hi-Last June the Bronco starting shifting hard into each gear- and the the OD light would blink- this went on for about 500 miles. I did not attempt a diagnostic-

Now, a year later- the same problem. I have not driven any differently except for two things- I drove in reverse for about 50 meters acouple of times and ran her at 80mph for about 45 minutes- then the next day I could feel a heavy, slugglish feel with the rig.
The first step is to admit I have a problem- I have a problem?
I'm not a DIY'er or code puller so that's why I've been hesitant about having someone look at it but....

What should I do?
Last transmission fluid change was at 128,300- Jan. 2002;
Changed fluid with OEM and ran it for 1500miles
Then drained and put in the synthetic I have always used.
Current mileage 225,600
You can get free code reading at AAMCO shops, sales pitch included of course. And I think most of the big Autoparts shops can read the tranny codes.
It sounds like your tranny fluid has almost 100K miles on it. Thats a lot even if it is synthetic.
Your tranny has 225K miles, that is a lot too.
At best you need a fluid change. At worst your tranny and fluid are old so you may need a rebuild.
Get Codes and post.

In other words, say I drive to have codes puled on the day that the OD light does NOT flash- will the codes still be there? (seems as if the OD light doesnt start til the rig is warmed up for 15-20 minutes)
The tranny code tripping is a little different from what I recall, so may be different about how many times it takes for the code to be stored in memory.
Also probably depends on what model year you have. I think 95 or 96 and later have OBD II which is more likely to store codes for more reasons. OBD I is 94 and not sure how many years earlier and doesn't trip codes as easily.
My 94 never flashed the OD light so I had no visible symptom other than harsh shifting when I had problems. I think the tranny did store codes but it was a long time ago so not sure.
Maybe one of the guys who really knows the trannies can step in and clarify this.
Simplest way is just have someone read the code for you. Only takes a minute and costs nothing at many shops and no obligation other than maybe a sales pitch.
Good Luck,

If you take it somewhere that tells you there is no trans code it is because they don't have the right type of scan tool. Most auto parts stores don't have the right tool to read Ford trans codes.
