Engine Swap

Hi all,

I'm new to the forum here but I hope I can find out some good info as well as give some.

I recently bought a 1982 f100 with no engine. I have a 400 and a c6 from a 1972 car that I have rebuilt. I am wondering if all I need to do is change the motor mounts to put this engine in my truck, or is there some other things I am missing. I know that it was the last year the 400 was an engine option in this truck. I appreciate any info.

Thanks,

Jared

You will need a rear sump oil pan, oil pump pickup tube and dipstick to go with the oil pan.

If the f100 had a 300 six cylinder, you will have to get the v8 frame brackets from a junkyard and bolt them in. I have a funny feeling if it had the 3.8 v6, those brackets may not fit either but I am not sure on that one. These are not the motor mounts. These are the brackets that the motor mounts bolt to on the frame.

Thanks for the reply. I didn't think of the oil pan stuff being different. Thanks alot that just saved me some headache.

The truck had a 302 with a c4 auto, I should have clarified on that.

Thanks,

Jared

Hey, I have been doing some searching online for oil pans and I have a question.

My truck is 2wd, do I need a rear sump pan for a 2wd truck?

Thanks,

Jared

Yes. On the 80-up trucks, the frontend and crossmember are the same, no matter if it's 4wd drive or 2wd. If you wanted to convert to 4wd, the 4wd suspension will bolt right in.

What the oil pan needs to miss is the crossmember. If you still have the 302, look at it and you will see it has a rear sump oil pan.

You may also need to move or replace the transmission crossmember also depending on where the crossmember connects to the trans on the C6.

They put 400's in the 60's style truck until 82, so finding the parts could be a trick. Prior years had front sump pans.

Just noticed my typo, should be 80's trucks, and have another correction. After messing with the 78 4x with a 351M I have, it is also rear sump to clear the front axle.

I had the engine parts from the engine that was in it and it had the oil pickup tube and rear sump pan. I'm going to try and make some time to go look in some junk yards to see what I can find.

I have to buy motor mounts so i'll check to see if they sell the transmission mount also.

Thanks everybody, this site is turning out to be a good resource!

ok, so the local junk yards around here are pitiful when it comes to older stuff and they don't have any parts. I've been searching online and I have found a pan, but it doesn't have a plug, dipstick or the oil pump pickup. Any ideas where I can find these?

Thanks,

Jared

Plug can be gotten from NAPA (I got the magnetic variant there, I forget its size).

I know the dipstick tube can still be bought new from Ford, my local dealer even
had one in stock. Well, I should say it was still available last year. No idea about
the dipstick itself.

Oil pump pickup... hmmm... machine shops in your area might know where to get
one. Perhaps Summit Racing or Jegs?

yeah, I looked online at summit but i'll give them a call and see what they say. I will go to the dealer sometime and ask them, but from past experiences it almost seems like they don't know about anything before the year 1999!

Thanks!

Also don't forget the main bearing cap stud. When you convert it over, you have to take one of the main bearing cap bolts out, and replace it with this stud. The extended pickup tube has a tab welded on it that slips over this stud, and then is held in place by a smaller nut. This supports the long pickup tube to take the strain off the oil pump body.
