I'm looking at getting an Expy from the 03-06 gen. I've heard there was a tranny overheat issue for some of these years but that it was fixed with a tranny cooler. What MY were affected?
I have a 2003 Expedition EB 5.4L 2WD 117,000+ mi.
Last year I had to have the limited slip differential clutch pack and ring gear replaced as the differential was "grabbing" during tight turns. The repair cost was just under $2,000.
Other than that, just minor stuff like window switches.
So you have 2 of them. Have you had any issues? Anything you don't like?
I love them. Perfect size for me and everything I do - fire dept gear, dog, kid, towing a boat and lots of mass should it ever need to protect me. Good long cruisers. The '04 is my wife's and she loves it too. The two I have now are my second and third. My '99 and the '03 both had the head problem which the dealer and Ford bargained with me on price for. One was $500 the other $1100 to fix. After the fix no issues. I have had several sets of rear end clutches in the '03 in the first 50k, all under warranty. Seems they have that under control now as well, the last set is over 60k. Other than that, like the other poster said, little stuff. Oh, just my preference but the OEM Contitracs are garbage.
yeah, ditch the conti's asap!! clutchpacks are most common issue. the only reason i'd get rid of mine is to buy a newer el. i bought mine in 06 w/69k on it, and as of today, i have just under 120k. no major complaints.
I really like my '06 - just passed the 60,000 km mark (warranty now expired) with only very minor issues. To see my list of things I would change, check out my two posts on this thread... https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/7...ml#post7200834
Cool read your post, what don't you like about the DVD system? I don't want the Navi either. Got a garmin for that.
I bought mine because it had nav and dvd. still have the dvd, with no problems. comes in handy with the kids when needed. ditched the oem nav after 6 months, as the quality sucked. i have an a/m nav headunit in now, and it is 1,000,000 times better than oem.
I guess my main issue with the DVD is the whole package - I still can't seem to get the audio controls to do what I want (like have the headphones for the movie in back and radio in the front seats). Since our kids are grown up it's not a big issue for me anymore - we haven't used the DVD in 2 years now. For the price, you would think that you could play DVDs, mp4s/H.264s, and other formats (I'm pretty sure it hasn't worked for me). And in colder temps (like lower than -15C or so) when I was piping my iPod through the A/V connection on the DVD, it wouldn't come on until the interior warmed up and I turned the whole vehicle off and on.
Maybe it's also just bad vibes from the alpha-quality experiment that is the built-in nav system... :-)
