This all first started off by pulling a boat from a buudies house to mine (maybe 10 miles). The temp ran up to about 200 and i stopped and waited a bit for it to cool down. Now when i start up and go cool it shifts fine but as it warms ups the shift from first to second may happen at normal rpms or i have to let off the pedal and it will shift into second. All other gears are fine. But sometimes it shifts fine. I was going to change fluid and filter. But wondering if this was going to take care of it or should i check for anything else at the same time. Kinda at a loss since dont know much in this area. And no OD light flashing. Any ideas what be greatly appreciated.
This is just a guess, but it sounds like your tranny cooler is plugged. I had a similar problem and ended up fixing it with a 4739 tru-cool with bypass.
My tranny runs cooler bypassing the fluid than it used to with the OEM cooler. I would have been better off to bypass the stock cooler and run without it.
I rinsed out the old cooler and it took several flushes to get all the junk out.
You might try pulling the cooler and flushing it out.

Have you done a flow test on the tranny? Get it up to at least 100 degrees and disconnect the rear tranny line. Time the discharge. You should get 32 ounces of oil in 15 seconds. Check the inlet line to the cooler, then back to the radiator cooler, then back to the discharge port on the front of the tranny. If low there, you have a pump problem.
It seems like you are not getting the temp drop across the cooler that you should be seeing. I assume this is due to flow.
I was having a similar problem with my tranny shifting hard. Turns out it was the Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) in the rear differential.
$25 and 20 minutes seems to have taken care of the problem. I installed the new VSS yesterday. 12 month / 12,000 miles warranty.
If you haven't changed the VSS in awhile (or ever) you might want to look at it. If it's fairly new but dirty, wipe it off (don't use any cleaner) and reinstall it. That might cure the problem for awhile.
I hadn't thought of it from that angle, IDMooseman. If the VSS was keeping the Torque Converter from locking up, then the fluid would heat fairly quickly... How does your speedo act? Normal, jumpy?
the speedo at a constant speed would fluctiate a little. so should i disconnect just the plug and clean that or pull it from the housing and clean the gunk off?
69Stang - If the connectors are dirty, clean them too. Pull the sensor from the diff and wipe it off. I use dielectric grease or vaseline on the plug end to help keep out water and crud.
Aaron - When the VSS is acting up, the speedo is jumpy. I've had the needle drop to the bottom of whatever side it is on and the odometer/tripmeter would blank out and reappear; still accumulating.
Unforetunately, this can also be a sign of a malfuntioning Camshaft Position Sensor (CPS), too.
