I have a 97 F250 4x4. The 4 wheel drive will not lock in. It is auto lock from the cab. I have the truck off of the ground and the drive shafts are spinning properly in 4x4 but only the front cross shaft on the drivers side spins. The passenger side doesn't move. When I stop the tires shut the engine down I can spin the passenger side shaft and it will move both sides out of the gearbox and vise versa. Does anyone have any ideas on what this might be?
Thanks!
Not having owned or worked on the auto systems for that year F-250s that much.
All 4 wheels off the ground.
Lock both hubs in (your year has manual over ride?) , then spin a front wheel, which ever one that does not spin the front propeller shaft probably has a defective hub system. Now, look at the bad side again and see if it is actually spinning it's own shaft, if it does, then you probably have a differential problem or a broken UJ (pass. side inner).
If you have the vacuum hubs then take them off and see if rusty water pours out, that was the sure sign on Explorers what the problem was.
