The C4 auto trans does not have very good down hill engine breaking, even in Low range. Have the oportunity to buy a NP435 mated to a 205 Tcase. Does anyone know the differences in length between the 435-205 setup and the C4-dana 20 setup used in the Early Broncos? The seller claims the 435-205 is from a 78 or 79 F150 or 250.
Any differences in u joint sizes? Know I will have to fab mounts but hoping that is about all. Can purchase 435-205 for $250. Think that's a good deal. But will it work easily in the Early Bronco?
Rfitz, I do know that the Np-205/ NP-435 combo is longer than the the stock set up. How much is not known. The Bronco came stock with Double U-joint style CV's at the T-case end of both front and rear Drive shafts. I've seen '78-79 Bronco's with the drive line you are looking at with both standerd u-joints and the cv joints. check the yokes to see which style it is. this may cause a problem with your existing drive shafts. As you can see by my Sig. file down below I have a Np-435 in my bronco. It is a kit from Wild Horses in Stockton CA. It does not change the location of the T-case and it keeps the 2.46 low range of the Dana 20 verses the 1.96 low range of the NP-205. You might get the tranny/t-case combo you are looking at and buy just the adaptor from Advanced Adapters (thats where Wild Horses gets the adapter from anyway) and use the Np-435 and your existing T-case. Either way expect to cut a big hole in the floor unless you have at least a 2" body lift. It will shift like rowing a boat but it can't be beat for off-roading. Good luck.

Thanks for the info. Have looked at WH and JamesDuff for the adapters. JD states to use a 435 from a 2 wheel drive and WH states to use one from a 4x. Hate to dish out that much money. Was hoping to be able to swap out the yokes on the 205 to make them work with my shafts. Had a 78 which did have the CV joints. Hate to have to have shafts redone again. Just spent $400 for a new front and the rear repaired.
Anyhow, went ahead and bought the 435 setup. Figured I would be able to get my money back if I decide not to install. Sounds like I might have to get a body lift, boy more money. Wife is having a fit already!
Rfitz, you shouldn't need a body lift for the np-435. I didn't use one. It will fit you just have to cut a 8x10 inch hole. I know that sounds like a lot, and it is but I hand built a tunnel cover and used a Mr. Gasket boot. the only thing you need to do with the Np-435 is hack-saw the threads off of the out-put shaft if they are still there. They interfere with the input shaft of the t-case. The adapter runs only $350 after return of core. also you need to use a torch to heat the shifter handle to bend it to clear the defroster plenum and the dash. Anyway good luck.

MJ, I know the Dana 20 is weaker than the NP-205 but have you ever heard of a Dana 20 getting shredded with a small block V-8 in front of it? granted the NP-205 is the king of T-cases but you sayed that you'd just spent $400 on drive shafts. just trying to help. If you go for the NP-435/NP-205 install lets us know as I would like to hear about any problems you run into. Good luck.

Think I'm going to give the 205 a try. 435 has a 31 spline output shaft. Adapter from Advance states need one with a 28 spline for the Dana 20. Guess I'll just have to mod Driveshafts again.
Going to try to find 205 output yokes from a 78 or 79 Bronco. I believe they used the same CV ujoint as the 76 and 77. If they will interchange, there's a SMALL chance I wouldn't have to modify. Don't know how hard it will be to find some though.
