FM70 or Magnaflow?

I'm looking to cut out and replace my muffler. I've already replaced the "Y" pipe. I want something louder than stock but not too loud

I tow a lot and want to find a muffler that will not drone inside the cab between 1600 - 1800 RPM's.

I'm trying to decide between Flowmaster's 70 Series, Magnaflow's wide open design 5x8x24, 5x11x22 or their XL Turbo 7" round, 30" case muffler.

I'd be open to another muffler if it meets my needs.

I'm using the Magnaflow XL on the Navigator. Slightly louder than stock, with NO drone whatsoever. It's been on there for 3 years now, and still looks like the day I put it on there. You really can't beat it for the price.

The XL series is a 3 chamber turbo style muffler with packing.(Not a straight through design) The FM70 is a baffle and chamber muffler with no packing. Honestly I think either would be a good choice. The Magnaflow would do better in harsher winter situations because of its stainless composition. The FM70 is aluminized steel. I have an FM70 and like it a lot.

What RPM range do you get some resonance? I've had several FM on my V8 vehicles and know they all have some reverberation. When it happens, does it interrupt your radio volume or conversation?

It's got 2 different mufflers on it. The truck has a 3.5" Magnaflow "catback" that was on it when I bought it. I'm pretty sure it's a diesel kit that was modified to fit the truck. It was too loud, so I added a 3.5" Edelbrock Victor series SS muffler to the system ahead of the Magnaflow muffler to dampen the volume a bit.IMO-it's still too loud when cruising at 1500-1700 rpms with a load. If Magnaflow made a 3.5" XL series muffler it'd be on the truck right now.

here are a few sound clips of various V10's, should get you pretty close to the sound you're looking for!

It doesnt interrupt your radio volume or conversation. The FM 70 is only slightly louder then the stock muffler. This muffler is designed for those that are always towing up grades or for fam vaction but dont want a loud exhaust tone but want a slight increase of sound over stock. Hope this helps

I blocked off a chamber on my FM70 as seen here.https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/7...-fm70-mod.html

Since my muffler is modified it has a little more pop and noise than a stock FM70. The chamber I blocked off is an anti drone chamber. I get some drone now at around 1500rpm but only when theres a decent load on the motor. Its nothing I'd call loud but its there. I also have Thorley headers/Y on mine and a non stock cat. Exhaust is all mandrel bent 3" out the stock location.

If Magnaflow made a 3.5" XL series muffler it'd be on the truck right now
FWIW a 3"IN/Out muffler can be expanded to fit the 3.5" pipe or the muffler inlet/outlet can be cut off and new larger pieces welded on. I'm not shure what the core size is though. Some mufflers use oversize cores compared to the inlet/outlet.(Some also use undersize cores)

I understand that, and the XL's inner core is the same diameter as the tubing entering the muffler.
