Are any of the tuners on the market for the 6.4 'removable' so that when you put your truck in for service, the dealer has no way of knowing you use it? I am more concerned about improving fuel mileage than increasing performance but don't want to mess with my warranty
Is it necessary to add exhaust and intake with tuner?
you can remove all the tuners out there. Mine is the banks works with the DPF still intact. Some of the others will work the same and some will work without the DPF.
But all tuners can be traced if ford wants to drill down far enough to see it.
Only way to really increase mpgs is gonna be with a tuner that gets rid of the dpf, but that tecnically is off-road apps.
Current exhaust is I think 4" so there really won't be any gains there and as far as a intake, won't really be anything there.
Changing the intake may be recommended based upon the tuner though.
senix is right, all tuners are traceable, IF they dig deep enough. If you go in for a window that wont go down, they're not going to check for a tuner. Blow your engine and it may be a different story. From what I've heard, (and it's only that, no facts to support it), alot of these tuners can't be traced by the dealer, but if a ford engineer get's a hold of it your screwed. Apparently ford can go "deeper" into the computer. As far as mpg's, the only way to dramatically increase them is to get rid of the dpf. You may gain a mile or two with it on, but I took mine off and have gained almost 7 mpg hand calculated. I know your feeling, the warrantee issue was huge for me also. Have you had any warrantee work done in the past on your vehicle?
Harness boxes like the Edge J/A and Banks Six Gun are much harder to find as they do not reflash the ECM. I brought my truck into a buddy of mine at a local dealership and had him check it when I was testing the Edge J/A and he said it didnt show anything.

I have no hard evidence to prove this but I will say the same as Ben did above. It has been said on this site several times that the technicians at your local dealerships will most likely not find anything in the system if they check for tuners. BUT, and here is the important part, if Ford decides to send a trained person to look into things then you are up the creek with no paddle. Ford can go alot deeper into things than your average technician at the local dealer can. Just throwing this out there so that people don't think they can run out and buy an Edge tuner now and be totally safe.
I think the bottom line is that if you plan on running a tuner (ANY TUNER) then don't count on being covered under warranty if your engine or transmission blow. That is the thinking that I went into it with and I think you are crazy if you go into it thinking anything else,IMO.
I agree 100%. If you melt your engine, they will go out of their way looking for reasons why and most likely find them. If they dont have a reason to though, all is well. The harness style boxes are harder to find, not impossible though.
the way most people get busted is they take the tuner off and go straight to dealership well its very easy for them to see when your last regen was and if you havent regen'd in 10,000 miles they know somethings up. your stock intake is rated to 400 hp i believe so your gonna need another intake to tune the truck. however if you delete the cat/dpf there are only a few tunes/tuners that will even get the truck to smoke. to echoe everyone else all tuners are traceable some easier than others but if they wanna find something they probably will.
when I got my tuner setup I was told that because the truck would be generating so much power, it was recommended to do the intake. These trucks create a ton of power and I think it's just as important for them to breathe in as it is to breathe out.
