Why not make it a Detroit or Powertrax auto locker? Same price but better results! 3.73 isn't much difference from 3.55. If you're unhappy with your 3.55, why not take it to 4.10? Your 302 would love the revs.. It would put you right in the start and middle of your powerband on the highway!
Yea was thinking 4.10 or 3.73, i kinda like my Gas mileage now, also it is a daly driver not a Track truck i babby the hell out of this truck i want to get the most mileage out of it motor and trans before its "CRATE" time.
I already started a new Savings Account for the truck so when i am ready for the new powertrain when ever the current one dies. I just roled 136,000 miles pushing for 200,000

You'll get that 200K if you baby the motor and take care of it. After all, it's a Ford.
I wouldn't be too concerned with the fuel mileage. Like I said I got 18 coming up here to WV and I have a 4.11 gear. It's probably closer to 3.73 or 3.55 with the 31 inch tires. So if you go to 3.73's, your RPM should be anywhere around three grand, which is where you start to really make power.
I'm not saying your fuel mileage won't take a hit but I don't think it would be as bad as you think it will be. It's too bad you can't experiment. Any other 302 guys here running some low gears? I think Lew is?

I don,t have any idea ??? Never checked the mileage , its not my daily driver just something to have fun with .. Never drive it in the rain or tow or haul any thing with it . I will check the mileage one day just to see what it gets , 5 mpg is ok with me ... Lew
Actually I don't like lockers. I had one in my previous truck and it didn't last 10-15 thousand miles. It was jerky and just annoying. I have seem several times where they just didn't last.
If it was not in a daily driver and it was more of a drag car or mud truck then the locker may be a better bet.
I like the LS much better for a street car. Much smoother operation.
I think 4.10 would be great with the 302 and autmatic overdrive. I wish my truck had that ratio, or at least 3.73. I have heard from a couple people that did it that the fuel economy went down with 4.10. So, from a mpg stand point the 3.73 is probably a better choice. It all comes down to what the truck is. Mine is a daily driver. If it was a weekend warrior or hot rod etc then the 4.10 would definitely go in.
With 3.73 the RPMs would probably be about 2200-2400 at 70. Its about 2000 at 70 with 3.55.

I hear what you're saying Ty. Sometimes my locker can really annoy me. It's nice to have when I find myself in a muddy situation though. Nothing like looking through your rear view and watching a shower of mud come spraying forth from both sides of the truck!
I agree with you also 3.73 would probably be best for a daily driver. I think 4.10's are just plain fun though. I'm wondering how much of a fuel mileage hit 4.10's can do to a 302?
I love my 4:10's in my lightning. I an get 17 on the hwy and 14 around town. Unless your making super big power the lower gears really help move these heavy trucks
Thats good to know. I may end up going to 4.10 at some point. I wonder if 3.73 would give better milage or not. With 3.55 I am currently getting 17 city/highway mix.
Hey Bill, The LS will throw 2 tails too! Its real fun in the wet.
Anyone running 4:10s w/ the 300? What is your mileage? I have a Lightning rearend in the garage that I was going to sell beause I was afraid of the fuel mileage.

I know that Bill has them, but 4.10 gears are really the wrong setup for an inline 6 unless it has oversized tires on it. He does have 31 inch tires though. The 300 is a low reving motor that makes its power in the lower RPMs and does not really need the gears. I would say that 4.10 is a better setup for the 302 351 motors. I wouldn't run that ratio with the 300 unless I had 33s or at least 32s on it. The 3.55 ratio is really a better choice for the 300. I'm not sure why Ford put 2.73 3.08 etc in these trucks at all, since they have overdrive.
