6.0 is dead

I was driving down the interstate today, runnin about 70 with the stock trailer on and 2 cows inside (6500lb load). All of the sudden the truck starts to lose power. I put it to the floor and nothing happened. I got the truck over to the side of the road, barely, and out of traffic. I cycled the key on and off a couple of times and got it to start, but it was really rough and all over the place, then it died.

I decided it might be a fuel issue, so I pulled the drain plug on the water seperator and got nothing but pure diesel. I cycled the key 3 or 4 more times and it once again started, ran rough, then died.

I had to call a buddy to come get the trailer, and another to haul the truck home. Ended up calling a rollback, and they loaded my truck onto the trailer with it. Anyways...anyone got any ideas?

Did you check all of your CAC boots? Did it smoke when it was losing power?

Could be a number of things. Was there smoke? If so, describe it (color, smell, etc). When was the last time fuel filters were changed out? Same question w/ oil change? The REAL important question - any DTC's?

Could be fuel supply (pump or restriction), injectors (or FICM), could be related to the high pressure oil system (including sensors), could be EGR related.

Did you check to see if the upper fuel filter bowl was being supplied w/ fuel by the pump (by cranking)?

Last oil change was just under 5k miles ago, was going to change it today. Fuel Filters were 10k. There was no smoke, the truck just started losing power. The check engine light never came on.

I haven't checked the upper fuel bowl, but there was fuel in the water seperator, and I could hear the pump running. I was able to get it to start once, but it didn't run for very long at all.

Don't rule out the STC fitting. Even though you have an 07, I don't think Navistar ever incorporated the fix into production units and so all 05-07 are subject to the STC failure. Typically, an STC leak doesn't cause any codes and your symptoms could point to a slow loss of high oil pressure.

You can have codes without the CEL. Assuming you have fuel pressure and flow, it sounds more and more like a high pressure oil system issue (leak). The DTC's could really help narrow it down. I would go ahead and change the oil/filter and the fuel filters.

It looks more and more like carrying the fitting/gauge to get a HPO pressure reading (from the ICP sensor plug) while cranking is an essential troubleshooting tool.

Also - jboczar did publish an easy way to tap into the sensor wires and check the pressure from voltage readings. I keep tips like this printed out in a booklet in the glove box. I hate breaking down on vacations and not have the ability to troubleshoot.

Pull the icp connector and see if it starts. Just something else to try.

I changed fuel filters this morning and got the truck to run. at first it sounded like it wasn't hitting on 2 or 3 cylinders, but it picked them up one at a time and evened out. I went ahead and left it on the trailer and took it to the dealer. will post when i know more.
