Hey all,
This is my first post here! I have a concern about my '04 F150 Supercrew 5.4L. When in 1st and/or 2nd it lags a lot. For example, if I'm 2nd gear it seems as though it is having trouble going, like it's in 1st gear or something. Then, when I shift up it finally catches and revs up... I hope this is brief explanation may help. The truck is lifted 6" w/ 325/60/r20s... 74,000 miles...
Any suggestions/ideas?
Thanks everyone,
Alan

yes i have a question myself, when im hitting 80/km bascialy changing from 3rd too 4th my truck vibrates a little bit all the way up threw to 95/km seems to shift ok any sugestions is great
I am not in the same situation as you are Birdman. If my truck is in 2nd gear, and I accelerate slowly form 0mph, it seems as though it is doing A LOT of work to get going. I don't hear, or feel, any vibration(s) at all. Once I get to about 10-15mph (about) and shift up to 3rd, it will rev up and finally catch... I'm not sure what is going on. I will try on my lunch break and get the exact.
How long have you had the lift and bigger tires? Do you have the 3.55 or 3.73 rear end?
If it feels like transmission slipping, check your fluid. 04s and 05s are bad about dumping fluid into the transfer case. If the fluid gets low they act crazy. Mine (04) did it around 50K. My Dad's (05) did it around 60K. The seal is less than $20 but the Tcase has to be opened.
If you start off in 2nd gear (manually shifting) it does not use first gear. You will have a hard time getting it to go especially with larger tires. You could start off in first to see if that would eliminate the problem.
I am assuming you have an automatic tranny, if you are starting out in second it is a programming thing that locks out first when tranny is manually put in second and you get first gear back when you shift to drive (third). Again this is assuming you have an automatic tranny.
Unless he had a custom tranny swap it should be an Auto. Only the 4.2s could come with the manual...
After looking through the TSBs for other reasons I came across this... does it fit what you're "feeling"? (I know its for the '05- it may be under the '04s too?) https://www.ford-trucks.com/tsb/full...hp?tsb=06-22-7
I agree with djack. If you put your transmission in 2nd gear, you are not using 1st. You are going straight to 2nd and would make it harder to go. and I also believe when you put it in 1st your throttle is also reduced.
