Np203 ???

I have the NP203 in my truck (72 f100 on a 78 bronco frame) and the rear seal in it is leaking. How hard is this to fix?

Another question is, I am starting to get a lot of slack in the drive train as well as the t-case seems to lock on it's own occasionally when in tight quarters like parking lots and such. How hard is it to swap out the 203 for a 205? I do have the C6 with the 351M.

A 205 will swap into a 203's place. Driveshafts on the other hand may not be the right length. I have heard that it is a fairly common swap except now you have a front end that will spin continously unless you install part-time locking hubs or a part-time front axle, i.e. a dana 44 front end with locking and unlocking hubs.

Thanks for the info. I think when and if this 203 goes out I will do the swap.

Does anyone know specifics on the drive shafts and whether they will interchange or not?

The driveshafts should be a length issue. You can check to see if the 203 has more length on the transmission mounting surface to the case. If there is a difference of more than an inch, you will have to consider obtaining driveshafts. A suspension lift will make this a even bigger possibility.

I swapped engine/tranny/transfer from another 78 Bronco into my 78 Bronco. My Bronco had the 203 transfer and the swapped unit was the 205. Both drive shafts are different length, so you would need shafts from a 205 equiped Bronco or have some made.

My Bronco already had manual lockouts on the front axle, so I didn't have to change anything there. I don't know if they all came with manuals or not.

sell that 203 they are hard to come by, and you should be able to get some cash for it since they are great to use to build a doubler 203 205 ford combo

With the 205 you will be burning more fuel because you will always be turning your front drive train. Have a look for a used 203 near you or have yours rebuilt. I got lucky, I changed my bronco to a manual tranny from an F-250 and the guy threw in the NP203 with it. I got both the tranny and the transfer case for $400. I ended up with a spare 203 sitting on my garage floor. If you were near me I could sell you that one but then again it is always nice to have a spare hanging around. Personally I would not put a 205 in. The full time 4 wheel drive will kill your gas mileage and wear your front drive train unnecessarily. Plus, what everyone else is saying is true, you will have to change your driveshafts front and rear. I remember pricing out a part time adapter for the 205 and if I remember correctly it was very expensive.

If you use your truck off road at all i would definately go for the 205 over the 203. The 203 is heavier and even with smallish tires (36s) the chain can and will stretch.

My apologies. Thanks for catching that B-UNO! I must have been tired when writing that. He is right, I had them backwards. Here it is corrected! 8-P
