So after doing the tranny fluid, getting the cooling system sorted out and getting the sound system hooked up and rocking, I finally got around to pulling codes with my Innova 3145. I got the following codes:
I did a quick search here and came up with the follwoing info:
1. ground wires attached onto the intake or TPS
2. PCM Ground wire problem
3. fuel pressure regulator
I am seeking any/all assistance from the Ford gods in my quest to repair and rid the veh of these codes and pull my gas milage out of the toilet. Photo's are welcome.
Checking the fuel pressure would be a good place to start, for finding the source of the code 172 and the bad fuel mileage. The 542 can be triggered by switching between fuel tanks while the engine is running -- it won't hurt anything. Check for wiring faults to the canister purge valve (not sure what engine your truck has, but it is in-line between the throttle body and the carbon canister).
Thanks for the input. I've heard of the switching tanks thing setting off a code sometimes and because of that I try to remember to switch tanks when the engine isn't running.
My truck is a 95 F250 XLT 4x4 with 5.8/351W (non MAF) and E4OD.
I was looking at what I think is the canister purge valve but didn't have the time to play detective. My next mechanic day is to locate and start testing. Any idea where the PCM is located anyone?
The engine computer/PCM, whichever name you prefer, is located behind the driver side kick panel and is accessed through the fenderwell on 92-96 trucks. It has a 60-pin plug held in by a small screw with a 10mm hex head.
It won't hurt anything to switch between tanks with the engine running; I do it all the time. Just don't worry about that particular code if it comes up. You can always clear it and re-test if you think there might be a fuel pump or wiring problem.
