i own a 92 f150 ext. cab 2WD with a 4 speed manual, and am planning on converting it to 4X4. my truck has a 2 piece driveshaft. so anyways, my question is, what do i need? i got ahold of a front axle from an 86 f150, but that's it. i'm not even sure the 86 axle will fit cleanly onto a 92. i know i will nwwd a new driveshaft, but did ford ever make a 2 piece shaft for 4x4 applications? if so, what transfer case did they use? i know my indapendant front suspention, when unbolted, should slide out like buttah, but what else will i have to change? also will it lift my front end any? i have a set of coil springs from a van with a 351, but if i add those will it lift it so it is uncorrectable other than drop down brackets for my radius arms?i know i have about a million and a half questions down here, so any help i could get would be good
Mudslinger,
R U SURE U REALLY REALLY Want to do this?
The Most simple way to do so, If So, is to find a complete rolling chasis and put Your body on it.
Otherwise.....
1-You need a new frame(the 2wd and 4wd aren't the same, even in the 150's)
2-Yes, you need a new/different front suspension, and of course the front drive axle(they aren't cheap either)
3-You'll need a new/different oilpan
4-Your rear suspension and shocks have to get changed out also
5-You'll have to acquire and install the transfer case.
By the time You are done a Rolling Chasis Body Swap Would have been FAR Cheaper;
Been there, done that, got the bills....
fwiw, I hope this helped

aha, you see, here's the reason i'm not just going out and buying a 4x4... i have an entire salvage yard at my disposal and can get the parts wiked cheap. the entire front axle [warn hubs, differential, springs, shocks, pitman arm, radius arm, and everything else i can't think of] cost me 100. i never heard you have to switch over frames, are you sure it isn't possible to modify the one i have [oxyacedaline is one of god's greatest inventions] and the rear susp. too? this is alot more than i planned on, but still worth doing. so what exactly do i have to do?
you can do this swap. the 1979 and earlier models have different frames 4wd vs 2wd. but between 1980 and 1996, ford had a better idea!! same frame, same holes to mount suspension.
the two peice driveshaft will have to be shortened and the front part of it will have to match the tranfer case output.
for more info, go to four wheel drive section of this site to 86 w4d swap. lots of info there.
Don't go buying a new frame just yet.Like the man said frome 80-96 the trucks are pritty much all the same under the sheet metal.These factory people dont make a lot of money changing things up.The 4 wheel does have extra straping to brace the front end,but all the hole are there.I have installed 2wd and 4wd lift kits on these fords.Same-Same.I know you got your heart set on this ,but "I" would go for the solid front axel out of a 78 or later front end.It would wind up being a better deal down the road.Free.W
