Lost A/C?

two weeks ago, i suddenly lost my air conditioning. the blower just blows out hot air. I'm about to make a cross country trip, and really don't want to have the windows down the whole drive. What can I do at home to pinpoint the problem? I don't know about the whole A/C system, and i've heard that it should really be done by a proffesional, but i don't have that kind of money to blow on this, and I'd like to do everything i can before i take it to a mechanic. thanks!

By blowing hot do you mean outside air hot, or the heat is on hot?

What I'm asking is how hot is the air coming out of the vents. Is it equal to the outside or inside air temperature, or is it like 160 degrees hot...like the heat is on?

sorry. it's like the heat is on. it's ~70* outside ambient, and it's blowing like 90*+ (don't have a thermometer to tell ya exactly what temp is)

In that case, your blend door is broken and is allowing air from the heater core to mix with the air from the A/C coil.

You can verify if it's the blend door by turning on the A/C and also turning the rear A/C on-if it's cold from the rear A/C,then the blend door is broken in the front. If not, then you've got other issues.

sorry guys i haven't had time to fix this, but just a quick update to the post...the vents vent HOT air when the A/C or heat is OFF as well...not blowing out, but venting. i don't think any air shoudl come out if everything is off...what could cause this?

how can i tell if this is the blend door, or the blend door motor? the motor will be 10x easier to replace, so i don't want to pull out the dash if its just the motor...getting ready to buy the part as soon as i can find a definitive answer! thanks for the help!

First thing first here. Does the a/c work? Is the compressor engaging when you turn the a/c on. You should hear a click and a slight change in engine rpm than should return. Do not go through all that hassle of a blend door. Make sure your a/c is working properly first. Yes, blend doors are a problem but it might be worth the $50 for someone to do an A/C test. Verify that first. Do you have rear A/C and heat? I assume you did what Alloro had posted. If you don't feel comfortable doing anything, have a shop diagnose the problem so you know what it is then you can tackle the repair yourself.
