low down on programmers?

I'm looking to increase fuel economy on 02 stroke 7.3. 4x4 f250 sb Just put on slide in camper, about 2000 lbs and getting ready for 4000 mile trip to Maine, and would like to get better mileage . Got around 20mpg on highway without camper running 65-70 mph . I look at all of the chips and programmers and all of the claims of 100 hp and 5 mpg improvements. How much of this is sales crap and bottom line what is the smartest route to take?
Not really looking to hot rod this thing just squeeze out all per gallon I can get , without spending a fortune, truck has about 70k miles on it and runs good now, without camper, but would like to get the most of it
Thanks Jeff

Welcome to FTE, Jeff. I see you registered a long time ago, but only have a few posts so I think the "welcome" is still appropriate!

This forum is a general forum for the SuperDuty trucks which include gas powered rigs too. Drop down to the 7.3L forum for more specific answers to your Powerstroke questions.

That being said, DP-Tuner, Tony Wildman, and Power Hungry Performance are the top three tuners for our diesels. All three will give you better fuel mileage, and TONS more power, safely.

I opted for DP-Tuner (a majority of us PSD guys on FTE are running his tunes) for my Excursion and F250.

It's about 50/50 marketing. There are a handful of little tricks to get the data to show what they want. 3-5mpg might be obtainable, but not while your using the extra 40-90hp. They might write a good econ tune to get you the most mileage, but don't expect massive HP/TQ gains at the same time (but you should see some improvement.)

Maybe for your V10 gas powered beast that's true, but the PSD custom tuners advertise for power and better engine and tranny management for towing. Better fuel mileage is just a fringe benefit, and isn't the main marketing thrust like it seems to be for gassers.

There are no tricks. Drive the truck the same way with a custom tune from one of the Big Three, compared to the stock tune, and a PSD rig will get better fuel mileage. Add an intake and exhaust (like most gassers also do) and the power, performance, and economy get even better.
