I have drained the gas out of my blood stream and put diesel in it, so I am in the mood to do something a little radical. Anyways, I can get a 78 F100.. FREE... Just need to take the 302 out of it... so that leaves me a old transmission... thats bad, so I decided... Lets put something modern in. So just wondering if there are any post (I can't find them if they are, but I am trying) if anyone ever put a cummins (turbo diesel) in a older F series truck, cause I would like to make this truck something showy.. and fast, got to have fast. That or make it one hell of a trailer puller. Anyways. Just wondering, I am looking for options, or if anyone knows about where and how to put a perkins in (I know they use to put perkins engines in them) then I would be happy. But yeah, just looking and figuring, can't do much till I got cash. Also note this is a old linkage clutch, so I need some help with tranny also, but thanks guys.
There's a few of us doing these swaps. HRDROKN is doing one in his 69 (same frame as our dentsides) and he's doing a nice job. Art just started one as well.
As stated - scroll down to the motor swap forum and look around
Thanks guys, now lol thing is being you... I gots no money, plus its a thought, if I would ever run into one, that I could take fro free...or cheap, so its what I can get, may stay gas but I want to make a little drag truck, but thanks guys it help and if I do it, I am so going to donate to this website, and find each and every one of you guys and shake your hands, I learned alot and have had fun to.
I did one in a 92F350. You are looking to put 1200 pounds on your front axle, so you may want to have a heavier chassis... An F100 chassis just is a bit on the light duty side for what you are looking to do.
Look up Perky, that is the user name for a gentleman that put a Perkins in an older truck like these, flip front and all.
i understand a diesel is on the heavy side for F-100 front coils,
but you can do what i did, well i didn't need them for holding up my 302w in my truck, but i did need them to bring the front end up to match the now jacked up rear end, and it did just that, from the floor to the center of the fender edge, in the rear is 41" and in the front its 37" that is much taller than stock! and with the bigger 31" tires the height should get taller by at least 1"
well go to the wreckers and find a 75-91 Econoline van, and find a E-350 or a E-450, i suggest getting the front coils out of a newer van, and one that is a diesel,
see the picture below, there installed now, but i got mine out of a 1991 E-450 diesel Ambulance, don't pay attention to the tire, its just for mock up, don't want the primer and paint wrecking the good tires, you can read the specs on my truck in my signature, and watch the trucks youtube video in the link
these coils went in with little modification, just some slight cuts into the bottom inner cup, so it would accept the larger coil, its all bolted in nice and fits like it was made for it, and its much thicker than the stock coil spring, hope my info and picture is helpful, i am sure with these heavier duty coils, you can easily put a diesel in your F-100, now you will have to upgrade the rear leaf springs, and these old trucks are pretty tough, i think with some easy simple mods, they can handle just about anything,
