AOD applications
I know that the AOD is not the best ford offers, but I want overdrive and I dont want the electronics or size of the E40D.
I guess you are talking about the 351M/400, nope, needs an adapter. The 351W bolts up and they all use a stock flywheel with correct balance. I have really looked into the adapters a while back, looking to put an AOD in my 70 Mach I instead of that heavy old FMX. Adapters are really a toss up. One kind cuts the bell off at the pump and bolts the adapter on with longer pump bolts. They claim it is strong----
. That one uses a standard length TC snout. The other type, Art Carr, uses a 1/2" spacer plate and requires a TC with a longer snout. I really like my E4OD in the 93 and except for the length would have no problem putting it in the mustang along with a Baumann controller or whatever other kind of tranny controller is available.
The AOD's or even the 4R70W can be rebuilt pretty strong. The 4R70W requires a controller of some sort as well but has lower 1st gear than AOD (2.84). You can put 4R70W guts (including stamped drum and 2" band along with an "A" OD servo. Lots of possibilities, just have to look at what suits you best. I have another E4OD tranny torn apart in my shed (out near the tall grass
) awaiting "roundtuits".LOL---
. I dont need an adapter to change from the FMX to an AOD/4R70W type tranny on my 351C Mach I. If I try a 434 with Alum heads etc. I will need an adapter. 1st mistake I've made all year
