I need some advice, hope yoou can give it to me. I have a 96 f250 7.3l with the E4oD that has 106,000 miles. a couple of days ago the overdrive light started flashing and the tranny started shifting hard like it has a radical shift kit in it. So I took it to the local diesel shop ( I dont think they know to much about trannies) and they puled the code p1728 well he told me I needed the trans rebuilt, I thought I should get it checked out by a trans shop so off to aamoco I went the next morning. At start up the light was not blinking and it shifted normally all the way there. When they diagnosed it, he told me that the torque converter was slipping, and I would need a new one and get the trans rebuilt I asked him if its just the converter then why do I need a rebuild and he told me if I only did the converter I would be back in a month because all of the particles floating around inside the tranny. My question is,he trying to get more money from me or is he being honest wouldnt the filter catch most all of the debris that may have came from the converter. so would a filter and fluid change along with a new converter last or would I be wasting my money?
Your trans fluid look bad, have tiny little metal floaters? Tiny little other floaters? If so, there is your answer.
Does that AAMCO have a good rep? How many of these do they do? Any other shop for 3rd opinion?
The trans fluid is a dark red looks normal to me and does not smell burnt. and I didnt see any contaminents on the dipstick. as far as aamoco I dont know about there rep I couldnt find anything on them. I am just leary of all trans shops since I had our taurus tranny rebuilt it lasted 13 months, warranty was for 12 arrrrgggg.
