AOD identification

Plan on doing a C4 to AOD swap but am unsure which variation of AOD would make for the easiest swap. Its going into a 79 F100 2wd.

Are there any casting numbers or specific features to look for?

Thanks

The only upgrage I know of is the slight change in '85. They improved the case strength and a couple other internal improvements. You can tell by the 5 bars on the top of the case, while the pre'85 had only 3 bars.
The truck AOD is a bit stronger with more discs and has a 1" longer tailstock housing than the car AOD.
Shift linkage should work from the C4. It's been a lot of years since I swap C4 to AOD and I don't remeber if I had to change anything.
All carbed engines used a solid linkage for the TV control, while EFI used a cable. The cable works better. Get a Lokar TV cable kit. It will save a lot of headaches.

I'll add that there were various upgrades made to the internal parts over the years so a later model tranny will be stronger than an earlier models... unless you find one rebuilt with upgrades of course.

You mean something like from your local tranny guru, Lentech.

The performance sites say they use '88-'93 cores, and to pick one from behind a V8, car or truck, or a six in a truck.

The short version of the performance trans is AOD-E and/or 4R70W parts in the AOD case, along with certain other magic.

Good luck with it.
