The only upgrage I know of is the slight change in '85. They improved the case strength and a couple other internal improvements. You can tell by the 5 bars on the top of the case, while the pre'85 had only 3 bars.
The truck AOD is a bit stronger with more discs and has a 1" longer tailstock housing than the car AOD.
Shift linkage should work from the C4. It's been a lot of years since I swap C4 to AOD and I don't remeber if I had to change anything.
All carbed engines used a solid linkage for the TV control, while EFI used a cable. The cable works better. Get a Lokar TV cable kit. It will save a lot of headaches.
I'll add that there were various upgrades made to the internal parts over the years so a later model tranny will be stronger than an earlier models... unless you find one rebuilt with upgrades of course.
