I'm looking to buy a 2000 or 2001 Excursion with anywhere between 135k-240k miles with the diesel engine. Are there known problems with these trucks that I should be looking for before I buy? Are the transmissions in them up to snuff? What should I watch for?
The 01s have an issue with the transmission up to Aug of 01 (if I recall correctly). It is the dreaded mechanical diode. Search for it in the super duty forum and get the correct dates. That way you can verify the date of manufacture of the tranny before buying an 01.

Why would you look for one with 240K!?
Because we're having our 3rd kid, and I'm selling my Acura, and I'm using that money to buy a different vehicle. That way I don't have to take out a loan for it, and I'm getting 11k for my Acura, so that's the only Excursions that I've found in that price range.
If the tranny needed to be fixed, what's the preferred method, rebuild or replace? How much does it cost? Are the new trannys built better, or are they expected to go out around 100-200k as well?
Oh, and BTW.. I don't need this for pulling anything, yet. I was looking at suburbans, explorers, and minvans. Why not get a vehicle twice the size of all these, w/ 4wd, and that gets close to the mpg's as the minivan? Plus, I've had 2 dodge cummins in the past, and loved modding those things and blowing black smoke everywhere. Now that I have 3 kids and a wife, I've found a way to get back to those days!!
The excursions are great but you have to mod a few things like sway bar, bilsteins, etc IF you were going to tow. BTW Black smoke means you aren't performing well. My old diesel never smoked a bit, good truck. Some people like the smoke but to me it says, "somebody fix me."

Thanks for the reply... Guess you've never been to a tractor pull? Black smoke from a diesel doesn't have anything to do with it not running right. Although it is unburnt fuel, so maybe that's what your talking about. Any diesel that's been modified above stock and puts out a good amount of power over stock will most certainly blow black smoke when floored.
Mine is a 00 gas ex and like my garage descrip says "eats transmissions like a chubby kid eats cake!
Good luck on your search. There are good exes out there. Just takes a while to find one.
Ahhh... a fellow SO. Indiana hoosier.... I've been tearing up Craigslist all morning... wish they had a nationwide search instead of going to each town individually.
If the diode fails only fix is a full rebuild. If you have a mechanical diode and it is still good the only way to "repair" it is a full rebuild. In other words, full rebuild. Some never fail. I personally would never take the chance.
There are a number of aftermarket rebuilders for the 4R100 who can make it stronger than most will ever need.
Wow... thanks for that link monsta... very helpful... Every '01 I've sent emails on, I've asked for date of manufacture to watch for that diode problem.
The diode problem is, to my understanding, significantly more of an issue on gassers; not so much on the diesels. The diode was proven to fail when running about 4300 rpm; trans starts to shift; take foot off of skinny pedal then mash it down again, and diode takes a dump. Diesels don't run that high rpm; and generally are not AS susceptible. Can't say it won't happen, but you have a lot better chance of it not popping up on the diesel.
I read this info in the 7.3 forum some time ago, and as I have an 01, it sort of stuck in my mind....

I may have the opportunity to get an '03 limited 4x4 with the 6.0 w/ dvd player and leather with 170k miles for 11k. Should I be worried about getting a 6.0 in the first year it came out? I heard that the 7.3 gets a little better mileage, is more reliable. What do ya'll think? Should I pull the trigger?

Gassers never got the mechanical diode. Although I did just recently hear of the rare case where one got by on the line, the diode issue is 99% diesel related.

170K sound like it's proven or finally ready to crap out. Personally, I wouldn't even consider an 03 6.0L. Just too hard to trust that engine, IMO. Great tranny though!
