ok, so here's the deal. I'm doing a frame off on my 78 f-150. It has a 300-6 np-435 4wd.
So, I'm browsing craigslist and see a 460 for 400 bucks. Turns out it came out of a 75 f-150 with a C6. So, it already has the correct 4wd oil sump/pan, the truck manifolds, the engine perches and the exhaust down pipes. I believe I would need a different bellhousing and flywheel?
As i'm talking to him he says he has a set of trim free (what I want) really nice doors and that 500 would haul it all home. I'm thinking well, that's a great price if the doors are Super nice.
My problem is that my 300-6 runs like new. I don't NEED the 460, though i NEED the doors. I have the money, but not realistically!
On the other hand, my little brother eventually wants to put a carbed 460 in his lowered 87' 4 speed shortbox stepside. So I could sell it to him, but he won't have the money for a LONG time!
Inventory, dont sweat it. I have found that all inventory seems to acumulate interest in one form or another. Either I sell it and make some money, or it sits there and I become more interested in it. LOL...either way thats not too bad if the doors are what he says they are.
I know my brothers truck would be like driving on ice with the 460 even bone stock! It has a 302 H.O. factory and the dam thing turns em into third. He wants to stroke a 460 and drop it in and I'm wondering how he figures on getting ANY traction! I guess he can fit HUGE tires and put in a 4-link etc. But hell that thing would fly!
I like the milage of my 300, its easy to work on and very reliable!
but yeah, I NEED the doors for my resto, mine are toasted and If I drive way down there I'll likely haul it all back LOL!
I think I'll take a look at the doors, but leave the 460.
I got a 440 my brother and I have wanted to put in an old ford for a long time. We already had the bellhousing modified to bolt up to the ford NP-435, we got the correct input shaft, all that's really left to do is build motor mounts.
The late seventies dodges used NP-435's as well, the mounting pattern was different and the input shaft had a diff. number of splines.
I'll tell you though, Finding a big block 4-speed bellhousing out of a dodge truck is not real easy!
