I am looking at a 1988 ZF S5-42. The parts yard said that there was only one size ZF for 88 but the according to the archives there was one for a small block and a different size for a big block or diesel. The one I am looking at came out of a F250 and I am looking to put it into a F150 with an I6. Any comments would be appreciated. The measurements on the bolt pattern seems to be the same.
300-Six, and 302/351 V-8s share the same so-called small block bellhousing bolt pattern. The 460 has a unique bellhousing bolt pattern, as does the diesel.
The the 'housing should have six bolts--two horizontal at the top of the housing, and fairly close together, three or four inches I'd guess.
Go out with a pad of paper and a measuring tape, and draw a picture of what you have now, spacing between bolts, starter location, etc, off some common reference point--those top two bolts would be good, then go measure up your find.
That's what I did when purchasing my bellhousing and tranny over the 'Net.
