Help with torque converter

I need to change out the torque converter on my 80 F-250 C6. It is making a sound like it is spinning and the splines are eventually catching up. It is quite eerie.

The question is: Can I take a converter from a c6 w/351 W and put it in my c6 w/ 400? I would think they would work the same but are there weight issues or specific applications? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks Jeff

Help with torque converter

Thanks oz,
I am going to try this this weekend. I still have to pull the motor and tranny out of the old truck first.

Are there any tricks to lining things up once I get the trucks apart and am ready to install it? I will have 2 helpers and we know enough to get us there. But, as they say; what could go wrong, probably will. Thanks again, Jeff

Help with torque converter

hmm..just make for sure that the torque converter goes all the way in, and you fill it up before reinstall, if not, you'll have to have a few extra quarts of trans fluid on hand other than the normal fill.

Help with torque converter

When installing a Torque converter onto a C-6 there should be about 1 inch from where the bellhousing ends and the torque converter would be flush against the flywheel.

Also... to make installing the Transmission a bit simpler... Take a 7/16 x 3" bolt (I think 7/16 is the thread size for the tranny-engine bolts) and Take a hack saw and cut of the bolt head, then take a file and file that end hex, such that you can fit a 6-point 3/8" socket onto it. Make two of these. These pins will act as GUIDE pins! Using a 3/8" socket install these pins into engine just about the holes where the short dowel pins are, now install tranny! MUCH EASIER - Now istall the two upper tranny - engine bolts. Then use the 3/8" socket again to remove them. Just be careful not to drop the tail of the tranny while doing this, because you could crack your case!!

I installed my C-6 Big block tranny into my 1984 Bronco by myself by doing this!

Uzi... Yamaha Sleds, Honda Bikes, and Ford Trucks....
