I have a customer in camp with an 08 F250 who had his check engine light come on and he lost power. His drive home is about 500 miles pulling a travel trailer so he elected to stay over and have the truck looked. The local Ford dealer is Walker Ford in Walker Minnesota and they took his truck in right away on Monday morning and found out the EGR was bad They then drove 40 miles to another dealer to get the parts after giving my customer a car and telling him to replace the gas he used. In the end they charged him a 100 dollars and nothing for the car. His truck has over 50,000 miles on it and his Oasis claims the EGR had been replaced before. The local mechanic said no way this was an orginal part.
I have an 08 F450 and my truck is a Ford buy back unit. I got it cheap after 3 dealers in Califorina couldn't figure out the truck needed the EGR cooler replaced, are these trucks to complicated for some dealer now?
My hat is off to Walker Ford, The one in Minnesota not Florida.
I would bet that some dealers give one of their techs the diesel manual on a laptop and pronounce them the new "diesel mechanic". I learned very quickly to ask whether or not a dealer had a certified diesel technician who has been trained by Ford to work on my model of engine.
I'm lucky enough to have had positive experiences with my 6.4, and the technician who works on it. I also am lucky enough to have learned how to avoid some of the bad experiences right away. My engine could blow up tomorrow but I know that it will be taken care of by a good dealer service dept.
Some dealers are not as knowledgeable on diesel as they should be for working on them. One of the things that impressed me about my dealer is the fact that they have a dedicated diesel mechanic. Unless the dealer has a really good mechanic or a dedicated diesel mechanic, my guess is they won't be as good on these engines.
Yes it is covered until 100,000 mi. , but after 36K there is a $100 deductable per repair that has to be paid. So if it's a $30.00 part you get hosed but if it's an engine or trans. you make out big time.
