Hey everybody, I need some advice, so here we go. I have the 08 sd 6.4l with the auto trans, every once in awhile if I am getting ready to put the hammer down and pass someone (speed is around 100kms per hour) I can feel the truck start to vibrate through the steering wheel as well as the gas pedal and the truck seems to want to fall on its face, after about 5 seconds of this she comes awake and takes off like a rocket. I find this strange because it does not happen all the time. Took it to the ford dealer they checked it over said they could not find anything, so they stuck a recorder on the truck and want me to press the button next time it happens.
Has anyone got any ideas please.
Is your condition making ANY kind of smoke come out the tail pipe?
Does it happen during a regen cycle, only when not in a regen cycle, or, during both?
Does it happen when you are empty, loaded, both?
You up to date on fuel filters? Air filter?
Water separator clean?
Sunny days? Rainy days? (this is important)
Ever use cetane boost? Engine should run 40 or higher.
Oil level ok? Not too high?
It's a lot of questions but they all have a purpose, some are dumb and obvious. Sorry.
Hi ruschejj, there is no smoke, it does it whether in regen or not, mostly with no load, I have my truck serviced at the required times so what exactly do you mean by fuel filters up to date? The last time it happened it was wet outside but not heavy rain, I have never used cetene boost, what do you think. Hi senix I am curous about you thinking it might be a intercooler problem please explain...........Thanks guys
My dealer replaced my CAC, I'm out of warranty and had to pay a $100 deductible. I can live with that and my truck runs better. Senix- could the same condition happen in the dry if the intercooler is defective? Mine never did.
The cetane boost is something that my diesel technician suggested to me and a lot of other guys here also think it's a good idea. I use the Motorcraft brand, 4oz./tank. The 6.4 is supposedly designed to run at cetane value at or above 40 and I think diesel fuel is inconsistent and not always labeled.

No just a gut feeling based upon what he is indicating. Don't think it would ever happen in dry conditions, but the symptons indicated it.
Ripster, please keep us posted. I have the same issue (yes wet, but several times dry) and a recorder installed (blue light is on enve when engine is turned off) but dealer did not me tell me to push any buttons when it happened.
Yes I change both filters every 10k MILES, and drain the separator (and run locked hubs) on the 15ht of every month. After one incident I did drain separator and fund nothing. I did have the whole assembly replaced due to a bad drain valve 5k mile ago.
Love the truck; hate the way too frequent visits to the dealer for repairs.
I also have this problem. It started on my last trip across the Nevada desert (bone dry). When I push the accelerator and the truck is going to drop a gear, the truck begins to shake and loose power for 5 to 8 seconds then start to recover. This is a 2008 6.4l with 5200 miles it was towing a 7000 pound travel trailer.
I have not had it to the dealer yet. Keep us posted for what you all find.
my truck did the same thing, you would stomp it and it would drop a gear, run up to 2500 rpms and the turbos would spool up and boost up, the truck would shake and a few seconds later it would hook up and go. my truck is a job 1, if yours is too this may fix yours. there was a new flash came out in may, the new flash reprogrammed the transmission control module. It was explained to me that the "defueling" action programmed in to protect the transmission was set wrong in the old program and would cause the truck to do that so whats happening is your cylinders are defueling to protect the tranny when it shouldn't be. so i would suggest getting your truck reflashed with the newest flash, if you already have it may have been a bad flash or something.

I'm curious about your comment on running the hubs locked, is this a good practice if the 4wd isn't used frequently?
i run them if I think I am going to use them, but there is no harm if they are just turning, but remember it does mean more parts are turning and that does require more energy so your mileage could suffer a little, but I don't know if you would notice.
I have run mine a couple hundred miles on the interstate several times in the winter.
It's been a few weeks since I have had my new CAC installed per the TSB for hesitation and white smoke in rainy weather. Truck runs much better in the rain/humid weather.
I will say that I can make the motor defuel itself still. If I have a load and I need speed going up a hill at 55-70 it will still defuel for a moment. Feels like a rev limiter on a small four cylinder gas motor. It does not last long I have just come to accept it as something this motor is going to do.
I like the idea of running the hubs locked once in a while. I have not done that but will start to.
Not highjacking here but thread seams to end on this note. I've been locking in my hubs on all my 4x'ers at least once a month. Belive goes way back helps to warm up and dry out all parts and redistribute the grease.
