Twisted tranny cooler lines=bad?

All, ('85 F-150 2wd C-6)

I was tinkering with the truck yesterday trying to pull some codes (found a MAP sensor bad) and noticed that the top tranny coolant line on the radiator was twisted so bad where it goes into the rad. that it almost looks completely crimped off. I was very upset to say the least. So I go under the truck and sure as heck on the same line going into the trans itself it was also twisted beyond repair. I don't know if this is the return line or the supply line to the radiator.

So my question is; Is this gonna be a bad thing? Is it driveable without causing to much damage if any? Will it affect the shifting? (it seems to shift into 2nd and 3rd more quickly and if I floor it, it won't hold in 1st or 2nd for very long) I just bought the truck and there is no telling how long it has been this way.

This truck is definitely a work in progress!

Yep.

Heat is an automatic's worst enemy, and with summer here...

I'd replace those lines ASAP, and do a filter/flush service at the same time.

You are driving on borrowed time. At best you are getting some cooling to the tranny but if you ever put a heavy load on the transmission, you will fry the tranny.

Fix the lines, save yourself thousands of bucks later. If you plan to do anything heavy duty, including stop and go by the way, you might consider an auxilliary tranny cooler, cheap and easy to do.

Good Luck,

Jim Henderson.

Thanks for the posts. Thank god I have two other cars. I'm just afraid that the damage has been done. Who knows how long the previous owners had driven it that way.

Now I have to find the time to get to the salvage yard to pick one up. And I definitely had planned on getting a tranny cooler in the near future. I will eventually use it for pulling just have to get it up and running 100% first. Everytime I think I've got it, bam! I find something else wrong. UGH!
