I have a question, in the old mustangs, everybody ask's does it have a toploader 4-speed? Or at least in old cars if i'm mistaken on them being in stangs, but what is a toploader? Is it a beefy 4-speed? Does it have OD, or is just a name that got put to it? Is in its time the same as now a T-5?
Thanks,
Nick

The older Mustangs (1964-73) did have top loaders for the V-8's. The top loaders are just what the name implies...there is a plate on the top of the tranny that you take off to access the gears, syncros, etc. The top loader was a strong transmission and even stonger for the big-block cars since the big block trannys came with a larger input shaft. The top loaders never came with an overdrive gear to my knowledge. The new T-5's are not as strong but should handle a well built 302.
