New Drums.....

After breaking a front drum on my 56 F100 I'm looking for a pair of replacements. I've come to realize that for $150 more than the cost of two drums, I can get a front disc conversion kit. Thats CRAZY. But it's a no-brainer. Disc brakes it is then...........
OH, btw, my new wood bed got here today. I'm excited.

Sounds like I'm to late!

The drums for your truck should be very available if you shop around. NAPA should have them for less than $50 each.

Don't be fooled by disc brake conversion numbers. Yes they are cheap at the wheels, but you will have to re line and get a new master cylinder set up as well.

I called Napa & they said 91.38 EACH. Why do you have to "re-line" and put a master cylinder? I was told it was a direct bolt on. I'm confussed now.

Wow, you are right! Man have they gone up since I had my 56! Fronts are $85-$95......Back ones are still about $55.

Did you look at the prices for the drums at Joblot?

http://www.joblotauto.com/

The last disc brake conversion kit I looked at required a change in Master cylinder and addition of an accumulator. But, after our PMs, it looks as though this kit may include that stuff - a good deal!

Will you post those prices and parts here, and let us know the shop you are buying from - please?

Thanks.

You are likely to be disappointed with brake parts from AutoZone. I went thru three M/C's for a Chev truck before I got one that worked right. My son used to work there and said there was > 50% return on rebuilt stuff, calipers especially. NAPA is name brand stuff, not a fair comparison.
