Hey guys,I was wondering if anyone had good instructions or a link to doing the torque converter lock up switch. I found the one at forgotten.net or something like that,I was just wondering if there is anymore out there, Thx.....Phil
Ok, not to be a dumb a$$ but how do you use the torque converter lockup. I know what it does and the benifets of it, but how do you use it. What happens if you forget it?

What Equine said but 3 times D/A$$$. Where can I go to learn basics about T/C's what they are supposed to do and how to tell if they do or not

The torque converter is like a clutch without a pedal (instead it's controlled by a computer). When it's not locked then the driveshaft has some slip compared to engine RPM (so you can sit at a light and not stall), kind of like pushing the clutch in on a manual. When it is locked then the shaft turns with engine RPM (like when let off the clutch and engage the manual tranny).
That is a real basic description. To operate, flick the switch and you're locked otherwise the torque converter will operate however the computer tells it to. If you leave it locked and come to a stop, your engine will stall (just like forgetting to push the clutch in as you come to a light).
Under normal circumstances the shift sequence is 1-2-3-torque converter lockup-Overdrive.
I am by no means telling you not to do the mod, I still have it and still use it, but please read this post I submitted a few weeks ago regarding how to use the switch. I was confused before and could've done some real damage to my transmission. Let me know if I can help in any way.
Purple wire, Yellow Trace. To confirm, i unplugged that wire from the connector and drove around the block, to confirm my converter didn't lock up at all. Then i new for a fact i had the right wire.
I guess my truck's not normal because my TC locks up before going into third under light to moderate throttle. TC lock up point can vary with the aggressiveness of throttle application and how your tuning is set up. My truck has been live tuned and my trans shifting characteristics have been tweaked to work with my trans and engine mods. The tuning keeps the TC locked down to about 20 mph. I just let it do its own thing.
So I'm going to reopen this if I may. I just recently bought a 2000 excursion 7.3 diesel. I'm new to diesel but learning. So far I've installed a new drop in filter in my airbox. Cut out the plastic behind the grill for cold ram air into the intake. I've done the FPR mod and cleaned out the exhaust back pressure tube. And last but not least I installed an Edge Evolution 2 programmer running stage 3 with timing advanced 2 degrees. Nothing else to the custom settings other than what stage 3 provided. Here is my problem. On the freeway at 65-75mph cruising with the cruise control on, the truck starts to shudder. I suspect my TC lockup is going out but not sure. So I wanted to test it buy installing a manual lockup switch. So I installed the switch running a wire from the plug going into the transmission on the purple with yellow wire using a saddle tap to a switch to part of the dash frame under the dash. Went to test out the switch and nothing happened. As y'all and other forum's have described I should feel something and the od light should start flashing. I get nothing. Tried testing the switch and my ground source and everything tests out fine. Tested the saddle tap. Its fine. Tested with the switch on and using a meter to check ohms at the tap to the frame of the truck I'm getting 8ohms. I would think there shouldn't be any resistance because its a dead short but that's what I'm getting. Am I connected to the right spot on the transmission or should I move the tap to the plug under the brake master cylinder. Could my TC lockup solenoid be going out and that's what's causing the shudder and why the manual switch doesn't work. Any info will help. Thank you.
So to update this. I installed the switch and got it working. After doing some farther research i found that my extra 2 degrees advancement on my injector timing was causing the shudder. Love the lockup (smoke) switch. Lol But here's my new problem. I just have the switch grounding out the purple with yellow wire. From what ive read, when i turn the switch on it locks up the converter and makes the OD light flash. Mine locks up but doesn't make the OD light flash. Instead it throws a check engine light. I dont remember the code ill have to look at it again and post later. Have any of y'all had this problem and is there a fix?
Something might be wrong with the way mine locks up because it will go from third gear and lockup, o/d seem to happen at the same time cousing a long drown out shift feeling witch i dont like. Anyone have the same proble?
