Post HD Tow package

I have an 02 Excursion with 7.3L PSD, got it from the dealer (used). I tow a 22' camper and some misc. equipment around and the Excursion OEM dealer sticker says it has HD tow package? I bought a brake controller for it but could not find the port to plug it in. I take it I do not need a brake controller for a my Excursion? A pre-installed HD tow packge is new to me. Any advice/.tips is appreciated.

There probably is not a "plug" for the brake controller, but you are probably pre-wired for one. There should be a group of tagged wires under the dash behind the OBD port (lower right of the steering column). You can wire the controller directly to these wires. With some controllers you can purchase the plugs seperately so that you can remove the controller easilly when not in use.

You should check the specs for the weight of your camper to determine if you need a brake controller, weight distributing hitch, etc.

No, there IS a plug for a brake controller. When you get a brake controller, you can get it with a model specific harness. That harness will plug directly into the plug under the dash in the Excursion. It's under there, keep looking. It has 4 wires. There was a thread on here recently telling where to look. I was able to find mine without much trouble.

Btw, get a Tekonsha Prodigy brake controller. They're the best.

Oh, and some states require trailer brakes for any trailer over even 2,000 lbs.

Yep, as Scott said, there is a plug under the dash. Pull your large access panel off and it is on the other side of one of the metal support brackets, almost inline with the radio. It is difficult to find...

Search is your friend. I searched "brake controller" and this was on the first page of results.

The tow package added the towing mirrors the rear anti sway bar and the wiring for the brake controller. Actually I think all the X's where wired for that. That said, I would check in the back and see if you do have the anti sway bar.

Did you atleast get the tow mirrors? If you didn't, I would be very hard pressed to say that you got the tow package on that one. Even tho the dealer may say it.

IMO a vehicle with this high a center of gravity should not have left the factory without one...for your smaller camper...you don't need one...but for the Ex by itself...I'd recommend one...it really does reduce the body roll in corners.

You can get a Hellwig delivered to your door for around $200...about an hour of your time to install and it is done...you won't be disappointed in the performance.

Good luck and a somewhat belated welcome to FTE!!!

Joe.

Like Joe says, I would recommend one. When I purchased the X there was no sway bar. I replaced my shocks and added the rear sway at the same time, and wow, what a difference. The body roll was noticably less.

New Excursion

I am the proud new owner of a 2004 Excursion Eddie Bower edition. I am also having trouble finding the plug for the brake controller. I seen a set of wires that look like they have been cut colors are (Red, White, Blue and 3 Black wires). I am still looking, but any more help would be great.

Where are you seeing these wires? In the engine bay? That is totally different.
