My next truck will not have a automatic tranny! I miss shifting anyway from when I was driving a 18! Clutches are a lot less expensive then a whole transmission and I will never get a 4x4 again If I need to use 4wd then obviously I don't need to be on the roads!
Good luck with your search for a standard. Most manufacturers are not supplying them because their customers are too lazy to learn how to operate them.
I dropped off the trailer today and the truck was fine... When the trailer is hooked up it feels like it slips, when there is no weight on it there is no slip at all, took it to my mechanic and he said that the rear springs are sprung(Shot) and that is throwing off the pinion when the trailer is put on the gooseneck ball! the axle isnt broken and the differential is fine! Will have to get new springs for the rear! Does that make sense to anyone? Randy
P.S. Also I have located some used low mileage F450's and 550's with standard 6 speed manual transmissions... New trucks probably not but I know they are available! I wouldnt buy a new truck anyway, I dont want to be the guinea pig and take the depreciation loss on a new truck.
What you have been talking about is not slipping but axle wrap, your springs are winding up under heavy load, some of this is normal. If you hear a clunk it's probably the overload spring hitting the rest it sits on under load. I run 3300 lbs of pin weight with our trailer and I got tired of hearing the banging around so I installed air bags to keep off the overload springs. Also check your shocks, my last work truck F350 SRW had a bad shock and it made all sorts of noises back their. It sounded like to much play in the rear end but it was the shocks banging around when the rear end was twisting or winding up under load. This truck weighed 9400 lbs 24/7 before I loaded it for the days work. The shock was so bad that you could not move it by hand after I removed it from the truck, all you could hear was broken parts inside grinding around.
Before you get to carried away replacing your springs get under your truck and unbolt the bottom of shocks and see if you have a problem there. Better yet if they have over 50K of hard use just replace them. Your not using your truck for a grocery getter so the shocks and other components don't last as long.
The shocks are shot..yes they are but when the truck is just sitting with nothing attached to it, instead of the springs looking like a smiley face they are actually frowning...Instead of the center of the springs being lower in the middle then the two ends its higher in the middle then the 2 ends. The rear drivers side is sitting lower then the passenger rear. This happened because I put a flatbed on the trailer and it sits 7 inches higher then the bed, the trailer neck had to be dropped about 5.5 inches and couldnt do it until I got back from breezewood,Pa. to Champaign,IL. I brought 3 cars home on the trailer and 7 inches to high on the front of a 51 ft trailer equals a big weight difference being added to the front and not equally distributed! Randy
Hey Randy I too was considering replacing my rear spring pack. What was the cost difference between the one ton and the 450? If you dont mind my asking what was the final cost? We have a spring place up in hear in Barre VT, and I was wondering how they compare.
thanks
Ive replace the leaf springs in the front of my yj, years ago. Wonder if big trucks are any different/difficult. One good thing about having a farmer for a father inlaw; mobile big green jack!
