Hey, guys. My dad has an 06 6.0 DRW 4x4 and it's a real work truck. It's totally stock except for the "Custom" dents in the rear bumper.
It does a LOT of towing and hauling and at 27,XXX miles it's worn its brakes right out. Any suggestions on good brakes? Would you recommend replacements directly from Ford or an aftermarket source?
Does he just need new pads, or does he need rotors also?
I haven't yet looked at them. If I had to guess I'd say pads and rotors, but my diagnosis is purely based on mileage, feel of the pedal, and stopping power. Not an actual inspection. It's been raining for the past month here and I just can't get myself to visually check the brakes on a dripping wet truck.
I would be surprised if he needed rotors, but if he does .....
Advanced Rotor Technologies (ART) Rotor - I personally LOVE these rotors and think they are the best choice.
Cryo Powerslot rotors are also good I hear.
Others I have read about (not sure of the actual performance):
Powerslot - ProStop Slotted Rotors They stop SD's like a car. Power Slot has different part numbers for the 05-07 HD front rotors vs. the Standard SRW SD front rotors. Rear part numbers are the same.
For PADS:
If you do not tow ALL THE TIME, the Hawk LTS pads are a very good choice for pads. Raybestos severe duty are good also I hear.
If you do tow ALL THE TIME: Hawk Performance Super Duty Pads.
Whatever brand you get. Just be sure to get the heavy duty ones. Not the standards. Also you should check the brakes on the trailer because if they are properly adjusted and working properly. You should have much longer wear than 27K on the truck. Go to the towing area and ask for "Greywolf" he was a former RV teck and he knows his business.
+1 for the ART rotors i got them after recommendations on here and have not ben disappointed and i am known for warping some rotors lol If you call them let them know you heard about them from here
Are the brakes pads on the inside front worn out. That is what happened to mine, the outside pads are fine. how do you get them to wear evenly?
This sounds like the calipers are stuck and are not sliding properly so only the piston side is working. teardown is the only way to free them and put caliper lube on contact spots after a good cleaning.
