why do I need GM calipers?

why do I need GM calipers?

Every time I see someone do a rear disc brake conversion on a FORD they use GM brake calipers. Why is this? It doesn't matter if it's a dana 60,70, or sterling, they always use GM calipers! I want to do such a swap on my 96 F350 4x4 sterling rear. I want to know why can't I buy the caliper brakets and modify and bolt on some 78 f250 front dana 60 rotors I have. Then I could just use my calipers off my 78 Front dana 60 right? Or should I just sell my 78 F250 4x4 and bolt a dana 70u rear under my 96 ford. I already have the 70 as well and the drum brakes on those seem to have less problems than the sterling. I need advice!

well i dunno but i dont see why you couldnt try it. if you can have your truck down for a bit you should go for it,

Because you need an emergency brake. And the cadilac elderado has the ebrake intergrated into the caliper.

In addition to Brad's comment, they also have a massive piston, are relatively cheaper compared to other calipers, most road racing classes approve the OEM ones as well as the aftermarket ones, and the fitting for feeding them fluid is a standard, generic thread. Also, the the shell of the caliper is fairly small compared to the piston, and very strong.

All these reasons combined is what makes them a good choice over other calipers.

Parts are parts.
