We are supposed to go camping tonight and I installed a Volant CAI last night in the hopes of getting a little extra power while towing our trailer. Everything was installed correctly but now the engine stumbles at idle. It takes a minute or so to happen after start up and throws codes P2196 & P2198 (too rich). It is a 2005 4.6L V8 STX and it ran perfect before this install. The CAI and filter are brand new and I don't see oil on the filter so I am stumped. I cleaned the MAF with MAF cleaner and let it air dry before reinstalling everything. I really appreciate any and all tips; we are supposed to head out this evening and I need to know whether or not I should replace the MAF or if it is something more simple. Thanks.
Disconnect the battery for 30 minutes. Reconnect and drive for the computer to learn the new setting. I think that it is overcompensating and dumping excessive fuel into the intake to match the increased air flow.
I had the negative terminal disconnected for a couple hours while installing the CAI. It's a stupid question but disconnecting the negative terminal does reset the ECM right?
I don't have any other mods. To add more detail to my previous explanation, after the install, it doesn't start right up. Takes a couple seconds to start. Once the engine is running, it feels like vibration is coming from the engine although it doesn't stumble right away. After a minute or so, the RPMs periodically drop out near stall before going up again. The MAF reading (g/sec) is all over the place from 14-15 to 10-11 (without revving the engine). I read something about someone who thought there MAF was bad and they were advised to let it idle with the MAF unplugged. I did this and it started MUCH better and even idled ok for 10-15 seconds before the same "almost stall" began all over again.
It sounds like some commmunication problems between the MAF and the PCM. Basically, it sounds like the PCM is sending your IAC bad info and not maintaining your idle speed properly. It doesn't happen often, but some trucks just don't like the Volant CAI.
You might want to put your stock unit back on and see if its still does it. Also, make sure that MAF is installed and seated properly. If I recall correctly, mine was a little difficult to seat. Also, check for any vacuum loss.
Small world indeed...if Obama keeps messing with NASA funding my world will get even smaller!
I recall Volant having all sorts of issues early on with their CAIs on the 04+ trucks. Did you buy this new, used, what? Frankly with the deadline you have... I would put the stock unit back on, reset the battery as mentioned.. and play another day.
I called Volant Tech Support and they said to make sure the MAF sensor is in the right direction and to check for leaks....all stuff I've covered.
Got home from work and put original air intake back on and it works like a charm. I have no idea why it didn't work with the Volant. CAI seems to be one of the simplest mods but, again, I'm stumped.
At least I can ponder this stuff around a campfire with a frosty brew. Thanks for the replies and have a great Independence Day.

You'd be surprised, there is a LOT of ingenuity that went into the stock design, and the interaction with the software. Im no fan of CAI upgrades, but thats fat to chew for a different day.

I intend on doing the same exact thing. Happy 4th to everyone!
