i have a 97 ford f250. i was going to try to scan the computer to check the codes. i didnt find an obd2 port under the dash. i did however find a, what looks like a obd1 port under the hood. i plugged into it and it wouldnt scan. how do i scan this truck?
The over 8500 GVWR trucks did not have to comply with OBD-II at the same time as the light duty vehicles, so the 97 F250 HD and heavier trucks have carryover OBD-I systems.
yea that fender port is what i tried to use. i connected my scanner to the black plug and nothing happended. it said it could not connect. do i still need to ground the little grey plug?
the manual isnt very good. it is a cheap scanner. it just said to use the "ford" plug. i didnt connect the little grey plug. i guess i learn something everyday.
Yep, you have to connect both plugs. Or else just use a wire to ground the little grey plug, get inside, turn your key to the on position, and count the light flashes.
I can offer extensive advice on any codes it throws.

I think we got you squared away man!
He pulled code 72 and 33. of 'em!
Told him to replace his vacuum line to the MAP and clean his EGR, hopefully that cures both of 'em!
