Normal to hesitate a little before hit the pedal?

My 2003 F350 Dually runs just a tad...not much at all...rough right before I give it the gas. Just a tiny bit of hesitation. As soon as I give it some gas, it runs very smooth and strong. I've never had a diesel before, so I don't know if this is normal...or if it's the indicator of a bigger problem on the horizon. Thanks for any input.

Do you mean it idles rough or has a hesitation when you touch the pedal?

Seems to idle fine, but I don't know what a diesel is supposed to feel like at idle! I think it's just a bit of roughness when I give it some gas. Seems like it then just kicks in nice and runs really smooth.

I think the best thing to do in your situation, if you don't know anyone else with a 7.3, is to go find another one to test drive. Pretend you're interested in buying and find one on a lot somewhere. Then come back and give us a better description of any differences. It may be normal, or it may be something. Just too hard for me to say right now based on your description. Sorry.

Thanks...great advice. That's a good idea. Having never driven one before...I have no idea what's normal and what's a problem. It seems to run fine...but hesitate just a snitch...I'll go drive another one and see how it feels. Thanks!

Okay...I drove a similar 7.3, and didn't feel the hesitation. I have narrowed it down. It seems to run fine until I get to about 1100 rpms...then it's missing and running rough. Once I get to about 1400 rpms, it seems to go away...or maybe I just think it is. I changed the fuel filter, didn't make any difference. To check, I put it in park and then stepped on the gas. Fairly smooth up until about 1100 rpms...then runs rough...then at about 1400 rpms seems to run smoother. Any ideas what might be causing this? Thanks. Also...no engine lights on or anything.,
