You should also check your fuses. I forgot which fuse it is. I blew a fuse in my truck, and the following symptons happend: speedo didn't work, tranny shifted really hard, and some of the interior over head lights didnt work. There is one fuse that controls all three of those.

The interior overhead lights didn't work? He said they don't on this truck either. If you can remember or find out, let me know!!
The reason that I said it was the torque converter is because that is exactly the symptoms my truck had when it went out. The tranny can only read torque converter slip in OD, so if it does it goes into limp mode and jacks up the line pressure which give you a shift that wants to put your head through the back glass. I confermed this on mine by reading the line presure through my edge evolution that I had at the time.
The flashing light however is the check engine light for the tranny and the only way to know for sure is to pull the code and then diagnose the problem.
Thanks for the diagrams Jim. Exactly what I needed.
Blake, that is very interesting cause I've never heard of a trans or pickup doing that before. I'll keep a lookout for that. Unfortunately, I probably won't have any diagnostic tools by then.
Growler, thanks for the info on the fuses. If I decide to go down there, I'll check them out!
I bought it regardless of knowing for sure. It was just too good of a deal. The body overall is in good shape. It's got a few dents and dings but not bad. It's a Western Hauler conversion so it's got the wood overhead and floor consoles, leather seats, wood package, and all the chrome's been painted. It definately needs some TLC.
Had my dad go get it yesterday since he was WAY closer (6 hours compared to 16). He said that it starts and runs, but takes 6 to 7 cranks before doing so. At idle it's got what he describes as a metal on metal sound/rattle but it goes away when you increase the revs. I'm guessing this might be the TC? He's going to start checking fuses, wiring, and sensors within the next day or so.
If you buy that truck and all that is wrong is a blown fuse... well you'll be one lucky SOB
He found 1 fuse blown. #8 under the dash which takes care of the speedometer memory. Replaced with one he found in a drawer in their kitchen. Hits the key and the speedo and odometer work fine. Took it out for a drive and the speedo works perfectly, it shifts just fine, and he said it's smoother running than his 95!!!! No od light flashing, no abs light on the dash, no check engine light, nadda!!
The metal on metal sound/rattle he is thinking might be the catalytic converter. It's got 225K and the stock cat. He also said that it idles right at 500 rpm which is pretty low I think. If he revs it up to 650/700 the noise goes away. He also said that when he took it out to drive it, when putting it in reverse it would die if he didn't give it a little fuel to keep the rpm's up above 600. Another reason he's leaning towards the cat because he said it's acting like it's bogging or choking itself down. Any thought???
Ok, so I've had the truck in my possession for the past few weeks... but kicked a rock up and punctured the radiator when I was towing it home so FINALLY got it back together this past weekend.
The trans is just fine. But the metal rubbing sound is definitely the TC. Nothing big, just annoying!! As for the hard shifting, no speedo... It's the fuses. Dad replaced #8 right after getting it. Then on Saturday of this past weekend I lost the speedo again and this time it was #18. I talked to Brian at BTS a few weeks ago about it and he said that if it keeps blowing fuses then I need to change out the shifter because it's causing the fuses to blow.
But I really like it. It's in good shape and dang comfortable to drive. Thanks for the advise.
