I'm sure some of you have seen this thread in the SD forum about V10 vs. Diesel (yes, another one). In that thread, I asked if anyone that is close by me with a V10 similar to my truck would be interested in hooking to a trailer and finding a hill to see how each truck does, and where each one shines. My suggestion was for someone with a V10 with another CCSB, 4x4, same size tires and gearing. Then, as predicted, someone chimes in and says "but the gearing can't be the same because the V10 is supposed to turn at higher rpm's."
Sooooo... that said, which would be a more equal comparison- a 7.3 with 3.73's against a V10 with 3.73's, or a 7.3 with 3.73's against a V10 with 4.10's or 4.30's? My goal is to develop a comparison with all things being equal to see which truck works better pulling. Yes, I'd even put the DP in stock for the comparison Thoughts?
I realize this is kind of pissing into the wind, but I thought by throwing it out there that maybe we could have a friendly FTE face-off and help settle this never ending debate about which motor is better for pulling.
I think to try and make them equal you would need 4.30's in the V10 with the 7.3 running 3.73's. Also the 3v V10's (05 and later) make more power than the 2v version. In all fairness though a 7.3 runs nice with 4.10's giving it more pulling power. Realistically I think most v10s were sold with 3.73's so why not test it with what is most common as stock?? Because like you said the v10 guys would say not fair! I dont think there is any test that will solve the debate!LOL!

I completely agree! I was hoping when I threw it out there without saying something like "who wants to run their V10 against my diesel so I can show you how much better my truck is!" that I'd get a bite or two without the usual BS arguments about gearing differences and the fact that a 7.3 has a turbo
I'm sure nothing will ever come of it, but I thought it would be fun to try it and see what actually shakes out.

I hear ya, it would be fun to try. Kind of reminds me of when I was running a hotshot with my 99 F350. My buddy had a 98 Dodge 3500 and every time we ran together it was a pulling contest to the top of the hills. I could get along side of him, but then he would come back until I could shift down again then I was pulling ahead, but neither one of us could get far enough ahead to complete a pass LOL. I always reminded him that I had 3.73s and he had 4.10s, but it was all fun.
One big difference between the diesel and gaser I have noticed, is the diesel will stay in OD much longer than the gaser.. As soon as you give the gaser a little gas pedal it will downshift.. For this reason I like the diesel a lot better..
