intake question

This is kind of stupid Question but anyways was wondering if there was and "exceptable" amout of dust that could be past the air filter in the intake. I run a K&N and notice there is a little bit of dust on the other side. i do a lot of dirt road driving and in fields, it has never gotton any worse. its not even bad enough that if you rub your finger on it you can;t hardly tell you have wiped any thing off. anyways just curious thanks alot you guys!

no, there is not acceptable level. part of the reason the K&N is thought to breath better is becasue it does not filter as good. by design, it will "pass" a little bit of dust thru the filter, unlike the paper filter.

The only acceptable level of dust is particles that can get through a paper filter. This is exactly why I do not use a K&N. I used to, fell for the whole "flows better equals more power" trap. I now use the AFE ProDryS, because it filters to the same level as a stock paper filter, but is freer flowing and washable. I have it more for the washable feature. There are other synthetic dry filters too. All of the synthetic elements from the major brands will outperform the K&N in terms of filtering efficiency. The whole purpose of having a filter is to keep stuff out of the engine. If it passes through anyway, you might as well toss it and go back to stock, or find something that works.
