Try using a regular bulb flash light. If you have a white led and a red filter you will barely see it. If you use a red led and a red filter you will see it much better. White leds dont put out a red spectrum light like a white light bulb will. So in essence the red filter kills all of the white led light.
We need to get some pics of people's gauges who have a hi beam indicator like this.
I couldn't quite get the exposure right with my point and shoot digital camera before the battery died.
This one used the flash, which captured everything else but you can see that the flash washed out the indicator and you can barely see it's burning.
This one does not have the flash and you can see the light is over exposed and appears to be about a billion candlepower.
I assure you the truth is somewhere in between. The indicator is very much red and very much noticeable even during the daylight, but certainly not bright enough to blind you at night.

That's a great theory but it doesn't work because it shines just fine through the brake light indicator.
