the first time i had to see my doc but this time im counting on you for help. i had my truck up on a lift today at the local shop because my front drivers side tire had flat spots and the treads were scaloped. the tire only has 5k on it, so my question is what could be causing it. (bearing, ujoint, ect.) he told me my upper tire rod had to be replaced because of all the play in it.(would this be the cause).
is a tire rod easy to change or leave it to him - he said 250 and he will line it up!
Thats not the worst price in the world with wheel alignment. If you got tools and mechanicaly inclined I would do it yourself. You need a special socket for the bearing nut and a press to press the joints in and out. The socket is not expensive but not everyone has a press, you can bring it to a shop to press the joints in for a fee.
I'll give you a warning. If one is bad, he might likly find the other ones bad as its apart and then he will give you a song and dance that all 4 are no good and quated you only the replacement of one to suck you into his shop.
When I did mine, I replaced all 4 ball joints and all 4 were finished.
Now I'm assuming were talking about the ball joints, I know the ball joints can cup and flat spot the hell out of the tires.
If its the tie rod, thats an easier job to perform.
im just talking about the upper/outer tire rod, sorry!
Tie rods are pretty easy to do IMO, just count how many turns the old one comes off and install the new one OR, measure from grease nipple to grease nipple. Then bring it in for a wheel alignment.
