285s are the next size up and IMO are the perfect size for a 99'-04' SD with stock wheels and suspension. 305s are wider but the weight rating on 305s tend to be low compared to 285s. 285/75R16s can be gotten in D or E load ratings and are pretty popular.
You get to play around with the numbers.
The first number is the width, so say 285. Divide that by 25.4 to get to imperial numbers, so the tire is 11.22" wide (theoretically.)
The second number is the aspect ratio, it's the percentage of the width that the side wall is. So call it a 55 which would give you 6.16".
Double that number (12.34) and add it to your wheel diameter (20) and you get 32.34".
If you made it 285/65r20 then you'd have something to effect of 34.56".
