heavy duty pkg vs plow prep

i was "building" a f350 on the ford site and came across a "heavy duty" suspension upgrade and a "plow prep" upgrade. anyone know the difference, and why you cant get both on the same truck? (can you plow with the heavy duty upgrade?)

They are similar but not the same. If the plan is to plow, get the plow prep as it also adds cooling and electrical upgrades.

IIRC the HD. and plow package use the same front springs.

This is per the 2009 F-350 Order Guide, but I suspect that they will carryover into the 2010 model year.

SNOW PLOW PREP PACKAGE (473)
Availability:
Optional on all F-350 Pickups
Not available with:
  • Heavy Service Suspension Package (67H)
Requires:
  • 4x4
Includes:
  • Computer selected springs for snowplow application.
  • Extra Heavy Duty Alternator (67D) w/Power Stroke® diesel engine (Heavy Duty Alternator with gas engine)
Options Available:
  • Dual Alternator (67A) (Diesel only)
NOTE 1: Restrictions apply; see Supplemental Reference or Body Builders Layout Book for details

HEAVY SERVICE SUSPENSION PACKAGE (67H)
Usage:
  • Recommended only on vehicles which will permanently utilize aftermarket equipment such as heavy duty winches, brush guards or other apparatus which loads the front axle to the specified Gross Axle Weight Rating (GAWR)
Availability:
  • Optional on all F-350 Pickups
Not available with:
  • Snow Plow Package (473), Camper Package (471), Stabilizer Package (63B) or Heavy Service Package for Pickup Box Delete (63R)
Includes:
  • Heavy service front springs (1 up upgrade above the spring computer selected as a consequence of options chosen. Not incl. if maximum springs have been computer selected as standard equipment)
NOTE 1: May result in deterioration of ride quality.
NOTE 2: Vehicle ride height will increase w/the addition of this package.

So, there are a couple of differences. But, to answer your latter question: Yes, you can tow with the Heavy Service Suspension Package.

The main difference is that the Heavy-Service Suspension option does a "one up" front spring upgrade, in other words one step up.

The plow-prep goes all the way, usually, to the heaviest front-springs available.

I had heard in the past that the plow prep was a +2 on the front springs and the heavy service was a +1 on the front springs. But you may be right Krewat. I didnt know this back in May when I ordered my 09 and I kinda goofed. Alot of folks here talk about lifting there 250's by putting 350 blocks in and swapping in the 'X' code springs or whatever. I figured for the minor price difference I might as well order it that way, a 350 with the heavier springs. But I did the wrong package (I ordered the heavy susp not the plow prep). Plus I use more truck more for hauling in the bed that towing so another advantage of the 350. Not a big deal though, I'm sure the heavy suspension package will help with payload and make it set a little higher at least, probably no where near level though. I might actually want to plow with it too, IDK. Right now I have a 42" blade on my old cub cadet... it does ok and probably doesnt make nearly as big of mess out of the gravel driveway than a truck would. But it does take a good hour for my small driveway and getting the cub to start in the cold is always a problem.

For my '01, I got "T" front springs, and the overloads and a big flat bottom leaf on the rear, and a steering stabilizer, with the heavy-service suspension.

But the newer ones, who knows what Ford does especially with the "computer selected" phrase in the documentation
