inline 6 carb help

I just bought a truck and the gas gauge doesn't work which lead to the discovery that i don't even get 10 mpg. After fixing all my vacuum leaks my truck ran rich(could smell gas so i assume it's rich?) but ran well for about a week then it seemed to not be getting enough gas. It would stall unless on the throttle. after talking to the old owner i found out they tampered with the carb to make up for the vacuum leak. so i decided to rebuild the carb. got the truck running rough ,adjusted now nothing. it's a carter yfa carb and any help would be greatly appreciated.

Getting fuel to the carb?

Spray some starting fluid down the throat of the carb. Will it try and start with the fluid?

Becareful of backfires when doing this!

Ok, Check to see if you have spark.

After confirming that you have spark.

Check the fuel mixture screw, is it adjusted properly?

Is it getting too much fuel perhaps?

I don't know anything about a Carter YFA carb but on any other carbs I've had, isn't
the general starting point for the idle mixture screws to turn 'em both in *just until
they seat, no tighter* and then turn 'em both out exactly one half turn? Perhaps 3/4
or one full turn could work, too, but turn 'em both exactly the same amount.

1/2 might not be far enough out for the Carter YFA.

It only has one mixture screw as it's a one barrel.

Mine needs 3 turns out just to be in the ballpark, but mine is feedback controlled, and california emissions.

well well welcom to the club of beeing a newb to the carbed 300-6 I, myself just picked up an 82 and am having all kinds of problems with the vacuum lines and getting the carb set up to run right. I am actually looking into switching over to a 2 or 4 bbl carb and going from there.

I am having the same problem you are of getting WAY WAY WAY to much gas and soaking the plugs.

PS.

COuld you do me a huge favor and take pictures of where all the vacume lines and egr lines run to and from on your motor. My Previous owner started ripping stuff off right and left and leaving stuff poen and i have no idea what goes where and what i need to block off. I tried to PM you but could not find the option to do it. MY name is Kyle and my E-mail for the pix would be Kyletaylor_62@hotmail.com thanys in advance

Change the Plugs if they are fouled like that.

As for the flooding, it will smell like gasoline, and you will see the inside of the air horn wet with fuel.

Another thing it might be is no fuel getting through the carb. Look down the air horn and pump the throttle a few times, you should see fuel squirt into the airhorn.

change the plugs, might want to go for the plug wires too.check the 2 bolts that hold the carb down, make sure they are tight. let us know what happens every time you try something.

it gets fuel in the airhorn so i checked all the plugs and cleaned them(no money till friday) and found a plug wire that was messed up(metal connector stayed on plug while wire and boot left) could that be the reason it wont start or that and the carb...? other wise everything is tight. as for the vacuum pictures i would but my camera works about as good as the carb. I just spent a night pluggin and playin till we had a winning combo.

do you have the fireing order correct? I think when you rebuilt the carb, you forgot to set the float level. a whole bunch of cranking will also flood it, and when the plugs get wet, it won't start.new plugs and wires when you get a chance will help a whole bunch. I don't see that you changed the cap and rotor, that would be of great help too.
