Reassembly advice

I got a different cab and I'm starting to rebuild my '79 F-250. I have a manual, and the cab I got was from an automatic. I'm not worried about that part. What I'm wondering is the heater core. I've attached two pictures of the difference between the two. Which is the better way to go? Is there an advantage from one to the other?

The cab in the 1st pic is a factory a/c cab, I think that big black box is the plenium?
Pic #2 is a NON a/c cab, do not mean to insult you, just wanted to make sure you knew that.

If you are going to go with factory a/c you will need the top pic cab or at least relocate the box, I believe.

I know a guy who removed his a/c system completely and I cut a none a/c cab patch to fill the hole, so he had the exact spot to bolt up his blower motor.

Hope this helps

The second cab will be replacing the cab in the first pic. I forgot about a/c. That's not an insult, I really didn't give that a thought. So it's better/easier to convert an a/c cab to a non a/c, rather than vice versa, correct?

Either way it's a big deal. You would have to cut the firewall section out of the non ac cab and weld it into the cab that had ac & weld up a cupple of small holes too. I removed the ac from my cab, it was pia & now I wish I wouldn't have removed it to begin with.

Since there's room, can I just hook the heater hoses up and leave the a/c cab as is, though it won't actually have a/c?

Or I guess I could trace the outline of the hole in the firewall on the a/c cab, use that as a template, and cut out that portion on the old cab without the a/c. Then just weld that piece into the firewall on the new one. I want it to look good, but it won't be anything I'm going to go around bragging about.

Im a little confused - you're using the non A/C cab, correct? Are you wanting to retain AC? Non-AC trucks have the heater hose fittings coming out of the firewall, whereas AC trucks have the heater hose fittings as part of the AC box. Also, on AC trucks there is a vacuum-operated shut-off valve inline with one of the heater hoses; it's not necessary for non-AC trucks.

No, I'm using an a/c cab. My current one does not have a/c and it is junk. I'm putting the cab with a/c on the non a/c truck.

If you don't mind that big box left in there you can just leave it but I think you would have to hook some vacuum up to run the heater controls.

Keep in mind the a/c box is a space "eater" in the eng compartment, is you are not going to install a/c, I would remove the box. IMO

Cut the non a/c cab firewall area out and transfer it to the new cab. Its not that difficult, the box will make it a PITA If you are gonna run headers, changing spark plugs ect.....

Just my 75 cents

I'm doing the exact same thing. You don't have to weld the non ac panel in. It can be screwed, riveted or glued on.

There are duct, wiring and block off plate changes too. Don't get rid of the donor cab until your new cab is fully functioning.

Don't ask, I will gladly tell you.

Here is a example of a firewall patch job, with what ever was handy. Yes this is a friends truck, and yes he drove it to a FTE G2G like this and yes we picked on him ALOT.

He had to drive it there with no blower or heater core, just to get the correct patch panel I cut out for him out of another truck.

why waste time to use the right patch when that one clearly works perfectly.
